SAW Video will be closed Saturday July 1st to Monday July 3rd for the
Canada Day long weekend. Equipment pickups for bookings over the long
weekend must be picked up by 6pm on Friday June 30th. SAW Video will open
again for business on Tuesday July 4th at 10am. Members requiring access to the
edit suites must book in advance with Ashleigh.

SAW Video requires the donation of a working fax machine for use in the
office. In exchange, we can offer a tax receipt based on current value
(after depreciation). Sorry to be fussy, no thermal machines please - paper

Intro to Avid Xpress DV Editing (2 Day Workshop)

Now, by popular demand, the Introduction to Avid Xpress DV editing workshop has been expanded to two full days of instruction! AVID Xpress DV is the ideal solution for anyone looking to edit DV on the desktop while maintaining many of the same features and the same interface as the more powerful dedicated AVID editing systems. The course will cover all steps of the process from setting up and capturing from a DV device, using the timeline based interface, and outputting back to DV or exporting for the web.
Day One of the workshop will focus on a complete overview of the Avid Xpress DV software demonstrated by the instructor.
Day Two of the workshop will be hands on for all participants to practice editing a brief sequence under the supervision of the instructor.
Workshop is limited to 6 participants. Depending on the size of the class, participants on Day Two may be seated in pairs at each editing workstation.
Ryan Stec is an artist and curator who's work deals with the idea of plurality in audiences experience of media. He started the Remix project(artengine.ca/remix) in 2002 with co-curator Anne Clarke, and it has become a popular local commissioning program producing over 30 new works from local video artists. He has also recently completed a residency at Platform Gallery (www.platform.fi) in Vaasa, Finland where he curated a program of nordic media art which was presented as a performance where the work was remixed in a live context.

MiniDV Video Production (2 Day Workshop)
By popular demand, SAW Video's classic Introduction to MiniDV Video Production workshop has been expanded to two full days of instruction! This two-day workshop teaches the basics of camera, audio and lighting through hands on training. On the first day of the workshop, participants will receive basic instruction on all three of SAW Video's prime 3-chip MiniDV cameras -- the Canon XL1, Panasonic AG-DVX100 and the Sony PD-150. Participants will be introduced to three point lighting and dealing with power on location. A variety of mics will be used and their applications will be discussed. Day two of the workshop provides the added opportunity for more hands on time and instruction. Shooting exercises will be indoors and outdoors (weather permitting) simulating varying conditions and situations. The second day of the workshop will focus exclusively on the Sony PD-150.
Ray Hagel has been a member of SAW Video since the mid-80's. He has worked in independent video production for twenty years, as a director, d.o.p., and is most known for his work on The Tom Green Show. Ray has extensive experience as an instructor and has taught production workshops for SAW Video and the National Screen Institute.

for The Factory of Light, an independent narrative film, shooting in Ottawa
July 23rd-30th, 2006.
This audition call is for the lead role of Beatrice, a young woman, aged
18-25.
The call is for a non-union actor, artist, dancer, or musician, interested
in being part of a collective film production. The story deals with themes
of contemporary city life, dislocation, and war.
Auditions are being held Thursday June 29th and Friday June 30th.

PLANET IN FOCUS: International Enviromental Film & Video Festival

Video Instructors - Youth, Camera, Action 2006 Job Description:
Planet in Focus, the International Environmental Film & Video Festival, is looking for instructors for our Youth, Camera, Action Environmental Video Production Camp. YCA is a two-week environmentally themed video production training camp for 25 youth between the ages of 14 - 18, from Toronto's diverse, underserved communities. Participants learn how to shoot and edit short videos that are later screened as part of the annual festival program in November. For the participants, YCA is an opportunity to learn about the environment, acquire valuable filmmaking skills, and make new friends, while creating a short documentary that will be screened publicly. For the instructor, this is a chance to hone and develop your leadership skills.
Reporting to the head on-site instructor, each video instructor is assigned to lead one group (up to 5 students). It is the instructor's job to guide the youth through the program curriculum over the two-week period as a teacher and mentor. Instructors also provide additional techinical support when required and they ensure that the students stay on schedule, that participants are behaving in a professional manner, and that they are working well with each other and having fun.
Skills Required:
Film or video production/post-production background (professional, amateur/independent, or post,secondary schooling are all valid)
Experience working with youth
Teaching or instructional experience
Interest in the environment
Strong communicator
Outgoing and a good motivator
Commitment to overseeing work to completion

Job Posting: Administrative Director
The Khyber Arts Society, an artist-run centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia,
is seeking a new Administrative Director. Candidates should be
compassionate about the arts, energetic, self-motivated, community-minded and
articulate. Strong administrative skills are required, along with the
general understanding of the motivation behind artist-run culture and specifically the Khyber's mandate of fostering critical thinking and support for emerging artists. Strong writing skills, preferably with
grants and arts comprehension necessary to continue securing operating
funds and special project monies. The ideal candidate should also have
a MFA or equivalent work experience in arts administration.
MS Word and Excel, Comprehensive database and web management skills,
Technical/Installation experience, Media and digital design experience
The position is currently an eight-month contract with an option to

The Khyber Centre for the Arts has been a significant site of artistic
dialogue in Halifax and the nation for over a decade. The Centre boasts
a lineage of directors whose enthusiasm and talent have accompanied the
Khyber through years of discovery and maturation. The Khyber's founding
director (who now runs a gallery in New York City named after his home country
of Canada), was among a group of industrious and devoted artists in need of a
place to meet, produce and exhibit. After negotiations with the city, the
artists were granted the use of a downtown, historic building that the
Khyber calls home to this very day.
