HOT DOCS EXCHANGE

HOT DOCS EXCHANGE - CALL FOR APPLICATIONS
49TH DOK Leipzig Festival
October 31 - November 5, 2006 * Leipzig, Germany

The Exchange
Hot Docs, in partnership with its provincial partners, will bring together a delegation of Canadian documentary producers to attend the 49th DOK Leipzig Festival, October 31 - November 5, 2006.  Founded in 1955, The DOK Leipzig Festival is Germany's largest documentary festival and a major event for the European documentary industry, bringing together filmmakers, producers, distributors, commissioning editors and others from both Eastern and Western Europe.

This initiative also builds on the formal partnership Hot Docs established with GZDOC Festival, China in 2005. In light of the rapid development, as well as the creative and financial potential, of the Chinese market, this
mission to Germany will look at co-production meetings between Canadian, German and Chinese producers in the framework of DOK Leipzig. The idea is to bring together producers from each country to meet and discuss new
documentary projects and to foster collaboration and international co-productions.

The Exchange will provide Canadian participants with full access to the festival and formal and informal opportunities to meet, not only with German documentary professionals (including commissioning editors, distributors, producers/directors) but also with an impressive international delegation.

The Exchange has the following objectives:
- To create advanced networking and professional development opportunities or Canadian producers through group and one-on-one meetings with German and international documentary professionals;
- To increase the participants' international market intelligence and, in particular, their knowledge of the German marketplace;
- To strengthen Canadian and German partnerships;
- To stimulate new financing and co-production opportunities.

Eligibility
Hot Docs is currently seeking applications from Canadian independent producers/directors.  To be eligible for the exchange, applicants must:

- Have produced/directed a minimum of one independent documentary that has been broadcast by a Canadian broadcaster or released theatrically.
- Have documentary projects currently in development with potential for German, Eastern European and/or Chinese co-production.
- Either have experience in or demonstrate the ability to enter the international marketplace.
- Applicants who have experience working with the Chinese market will be strongly considered.

Travel and accommodation subsidies will be provided by your applicable participating provincial agency. Please contact these organizations directly to determine their specific financial support. Hot Docs will organize a
formal itinerary of meetings with German and international documentary commissioning editors and other documentary professionals. Participants will be responsible for all costs above and beyond the subsidy provided by their provincial agency.

Apply Now!
To apply for a position in the Canadian delegation, please submit a brief proposal to the Hot Docs office including:
- A letter outlining your interest in attending the DOK Leipzig Festival and how you feel you would benefit professionally from the experience (maximum 1 page).
- A current resume, including a list of your key production credits (maximum 2 pages).
- A brief description of your current documentary projects in development (maximum 1 page per project).

Please include a cover sheet with your name, the name of your production company, your mailing address, telephone number, fax number and email address.

Deadline for complete applications is 5:00 PM, Tuesday, SEPTEMBER 5, 2006.

Successful Applicants
Following the submission deadline, a selection committee will review all applications. Successful applicants will be informed of their inclusion in the delegation by SEPTEMBER 10th. Exchange participants will be asked to
complete a questionnaire for Hot Docs within one month of their return from the DOK Leipzig Festival and submit a brief update six months after the festival, documenting any production opportunities that arose from their
trip.

Past Hot Docs' Exchanges include Australia (2000), the Nordic countries (2001), Germany (2002), the United Kingdom (2003), the Netherlands (2004) and China (2005). Now in its 14th year, Hot Docs is North America's largest documentary festival. Each year, the festival presents over 100 cutting-edge documentary films from across Canada and around the world, as well as a full roster of professional development and market events geared to documentary professionals. The Hot Docs 2007 Festival will take place April 20 - 29 in Toronto.

The Audio-Visual Preservation Trust of Canada is inviting submissions for its new book

Tentatively titled Vanishing Media this book will celebrate the tenth anniversary of the AV Trust, a national, non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of and improvement of access to Canada's audio-visual heritage. Vanishing Media will examine works (films, television programs, and audio recordings) that have been lost because little, if any, attention was paid to their preservation. Because the history of audio-visual production in Canada is not very well documented, the richness and variety of these missing works is largely unknown. Vanishing Media is an attempt to rectify the situation. We are looking for one hundred entries of one thousand words (or less) each by professionals in audiovisual production, academics, and cultural custodians. Each entry will profile and include an image of an individual Canadian work that is no longer available.

THE OTTAWA ART GALLERY
CUBICULES
25 August to 22 October 2006
Organized by Perte de Signal (Montreal)

Jason Arsenault, Alexis Bellavance, Myriam Bessette, Robin Dupuis, Claudette Lemay

The media artists involved in Cubicules agreed to follow a particular constraint, namely to rethink the dimensions of their work in terms of small installations, such as small video objects. Cubicules thus privileges artistic processes that favour experimentation and the revitalization of media arts practices over the presentation of objects for mere contemplation. The video installations included in this exhibition explore new forms of sensorality, as well as ways of reading the moving image, while also creating unique environments: meeting places between human and machine.

Considering video installation in terms of its spatial dimensions led the group to propose interventions that allowed them to push the limits of their art. The work of media artist and Perte de Signal member, Jason Arsenault, is engaged primarily in creating digital video installations and single-channel videos that seek to question the spectator's role, reception, and experience of image and sound. Alexis Bellavance's work concentrates on the hidden facets of "reality," and attempts to give voice to ambiguous silences and the chaotic aesthetic of nature in its more intimate forms through the use of installation, performance, and audio art. Myriam Bessette works primarily in media art, in which she undertakes a variety of digital sound and video installations, as well as single-channel video. Robin Dupuis is a founding member and Artistic Director of Perte de Signal. His work aims to create an aleatory, uncertain and baroque environment within a particular construction. In the work of Claudette Lemay, transformed images of the body create an intimate and poetic universe, to which her voice gives rhythm.

Perte de Signal is a media arts research and development centre whose projects attempt to reconsider how digital works are presented. It is a non-profit organization that provides professional services to the community, including artist representation, production of artworks and events, equipment rental, curatorial work, mentorship, networking, publishing, advocacy for artist rights, ancillary support for improving artist's socio-economic conditions, and promoting media arts.

Incidences, a media arts DVD by Perte de Signal, 2005 (20 min.) brings together the work of Montreal artists who have marked the Canadian video art landscape with their innovative practice. Generated through the use of digital tools, the selected works and remixes recount processes that oscillate between a defined program and the accidental. LA GALERIE D'ART D'OTTAWA
CUBICULES
Du 25 aout au 22 octobre 2006
Organisee par Perte de Signal (Montreal)

Jason Arsenault, Alexis Bellavance, Myriam Bessette, Robin Dupuis, Claudette Lemay
