DIRECTOR'S NOTES
goback

I have very sad news to pass on from LIFT, a sister media arts centre in Toronto.

On Sunday, LIFT's Executive Director, Roberto Ariganello, passed away suddenly while on vacation in Nova Scotia. A practicing filmmaker and photographer, Roberto was an exceptional administrator, fierce advocate for the media arts, a friend and a colleague.

"Roberto's contribution to the film and media arts community in Toronto and across Canada cannot be understated. His tireless work in the community and his enthusiasm for film affected countless artists, arts organizations, administrators, students, and film lovers. With his boundless energy and spirit, Roberto encouraged numerous emerging and established artists to pick up a camera and get to work. His refusal to accept traditional boundaries and rules inspired us all. A regular feature at Toronto screenings and art events, we will miss his easy humour, generosity, and eagerness to debate current arts issues.

Roberto spent the past nine years working and advocating on behalf of media artists through his employment at the Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto (LIFT) and his volunteer board contribution to the arts community in Toronto. He became the Executive Director of LIFT in April of 2003 and prior to this was LIFT's Equipment & Workshop Coordinator. Roberto was the past president/chair to such organizations as the Canadian Filmmakers Distribution Centre (CFMDC) from 2001 to 2003 and Pleasure Dome from 2000 to 2004 and was currently the Ontario representative for the Independent Media Arts Alliance (IMAA)." (from LIFT's communiqué)

Heartfelt condolences go out from SAW Video staff and board to Roberto's family and friends. With Roberto's passing, the media arts family in Canada has lost a brother.

RENDEZVOUS WITH MADNESS FILM FESTIVAL
goback

An annual event produced by Workman Arts

Rendezvous with Madness Film Festival is a film festival that presents new and classic work on mental health and addiction themes. In its 14th year, RWM continues to explore, through film, the facts and mythologies that surround mental illness and addiction. Each of the festival's themed programs includes a grouping of films and panel discussions or workshops involving filmmakers, artists and people with professional and personal experience with mental illness and addiction, that encourages discussion and reflection of these images and what they truly represent. The location of the screenings at the Queen Street Site of the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health provides a context that reflexively demands further thinking about the definitions and social uses of madness. Unlike other hospitals, a psychiatric institution is a place most people have never been inside. Firsthand impressions are confined to what ‘leaks' out of the hospital. For example, the patients' daily comings and goings or an occurrence of a large spill like deinstitutionalization. The hospital itself is symptomatic of the patient in that it is averted from view and thereby ‘out of mind’.

This year's festival runs from November 9-18, 2006. We are particularly interested in showcasing independent work, both Canadian and International.

In addition to films, we welcome submissions of new media art installations. We invite anyone working on installations to contact us regarding submissions.

DEADLINE: August 28, 2006.

LIFT: 13TH ANNUAL NATIONAL SALON DES REFUSES
goback

The Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto presents

The 13th Annual National Salon des Refusés

GENERAL INFORMATION

Until the 1863 the French Académie des Beaux Arts decided which artists received public exhibition. Any work which strayed from realism, which defined "good art" at the time, was rejected. In 1863, the Académie was especially censorious, rejecting an unprecedented 2800 canvases. This bold statement caused such public outrage that the Emperor, Louis Napoleon, was forced to demand that the Académie display the rejected works in a separate exhibition. This new exhibition, the Salon des Refusés, finally garnered artists outside of the Académie's canon the recognition they deserved. It is from this tradition that LIFT's National Salon des Refusés emerged. Each year LIFT presents a non-curated selection of Canadian films that were passed-over by the Toronto International Film Festival. The Salon is programmed through a lottery draw. That is, films and the order in which they are shown are determined by the draw. There are no substitutions or exceptions. The Salon des Refusés will screen only short films this year of under 20 minutes in length. Please note, LIFT will reimburse the 2006 TIFF entry fee for all films screened at the Salon.

DATES

Deadline for submissions to this year's Salon is Friday, August 11th, 2006 at 5:00 p.m.

All selected prints must reach the LIFT office no later than Friday, August 25th, 2006. The Salon des Refusés will be held on Wednesday, September 6th, 2005, at 8:00 p.m., at the Gladstone Hotel (1214 Queen Street West), as part of Shine It On!

ELIGIBILITY

To be eligible for the lottery draw, all films must meet the following requirements:

1. Have an official rejection letter from the 2006 Toronto International Film Festival.

2. Be composite prints in 16mm, Regular 8, Super 8, or BetaSP (NTSC) only.

3. Have the copyright residing with the applying filmmaker.

4. The filmmaker must be a Canadian Citizen or permanent resident.

5. The Salon will accept only short films this year of under 20 minutes in length.

SUBMISSIONS

Entry forms must be completed and returned to LIFT, together with a copy of your official letter of rejection from the 2006 Toronto International Film Festival, by Friday, August 11th, 2006 at 5:00 p.m. Entry forms may be faxed (416.588.7017) or mailed to: LIFT, 171 East Liberty Street, Suite 301, Toronto, Ontario, M6K 3P6.

SHIPPING INFORMATION

Selected prints must reach the LIFT office by Friday, August 25th, 2006 at the expense of the filmmaker. LIFT will cover the cost of returning selected films and will send them Priority Post via Canada Post.
