WORKSHOP COORDINATOR (Part-time position) 

SAW Video is also seeking a Workshop coordinator to oversee all workshop programming.  This is a one year contract position with potential for renewal. This is a contract position with no employment benefits.  Start Date: October 2, 2006

Hours of work: 12 hours per week Rate of pay: $15 per hour

 The Workshop Coordinator will:

  • Coordinate all aspects of SAW Video’s ongoing workshops including booking instructors, confirming participants, promotion, etc. ;Prepare the space, equipment, and material for workshops when required; Develop new workshops ideas in conjunction with staff, and workshop committee, and instructors;         Oversee the development of curriculum for workshops; Liaise with community organizations on collaborative initiatives and off-site programming; Coordinate SAW Video’s exciting new mobile community outreach video workshop initiative, Far Out Locations. 

Qualifications:The selected individual will: 

  • Have excellent organizational skills and strong people skills; Experience in video production; Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs;
  • Have excellent spoken and written skills in English.  Bilingualism would be an asset.

Grant Writing Workshop for Media Artists

Saturday, August 26 2006 11:00am - 5:00pm (SPACE STILL AVAILABLE!)

This popular workshop is designed to help media artists represent their projects clearly and concisely. Veteran filmmaker Penny McCann will take emerging film and video makers through the process of applying to cultural agencies for funding.

Participants will learn the do's and dont's of grant writing (aka "Penny's Principles of Grant Writing") and see examples of successful proposals, complete with budgets, schedules, and project descriptions. They will learn about the jury process and how to effectively present support material. Participants should have at least a one page project description ready for scrutiny - complete proposals are also welcome. The workshop includes individual one-on-one sessions with each participant.

2 Day Mini-DV Production Workshop

By popular demand, SAW Video's classic Introduction to MiniDV Video Production workshop has been expanded to two full days of instruction! This two-day workshop teaches the basics of camera, audio and lighting through hands on training. On the first day of the workshop, participants will receive basic instruction on all three of SAW Video's prime 3-chip MiniDV cameras -- the Canon XL1, Panasonic AG-DVX100 and the Sony PD-150. Participants will be introduced to three point lighting and dealing with power on location. A variety of mics will be used and their applications will be discussed. Day two of the workshop provides the added opportunity for more hands on time and instruction. Shooting exercises will be indoors and outdoors (weather permitting) simulating varying conditions and situations. The second day of the workshop will focus exclusively on the Sony PD-150.

REEL DIVERSITY

The National Film Board invites aspiring directors to submit their documentary ideas to REEL DIVERSITY, a national competition for emerging filmmakers of colour. REEL DIVERSITY will give three promising directors the chance to direct their first professional documentary with the NFB, to be broadcast nationally on CBC Newsworld: The Lens.

Proposals can be on any topic... we're looking for documentary projects that combine strong narratives, compelling characters, and a creative visual approach with unique access or insight into a given subject matter.

Following last year's revamped competition process, up to 15 semi-finalists will be short-listed to develop their proposals with an NFB producer and as many as eight finalists will be selected to attend a 3-day intensive training session. Three projects will ultimately be greenlit for production.

Deadline for submissions is October 27, 2006.

ESPACE VIDIOGRAPHE
2007-2008 PROGRAMMING

Espace Vidiographe, the programming division of Vidiographe, invites artists and curators to submit proposals for video programs and media-arts exhibitions. Every year Espace Vidiographe presents between seven and nine activities (five to seven programs, one or two exhibitions), in different venues, and in partnership with other cultural organizations.

Projects can be submitted once a year and are reviewed by a programming committee. We welcome proposals from emerging curators and artists as well as established ones.

We encourage proposals that provoke thought on the language of video and its modes of representation, encourage debate, and promote exchanges between different media-arts practices and between local and international production.

SUBMISSIONS MUST INCLUDE:
- Project description
- Artistic statement
- List of works to be programmed by curators
- List of technical resources (equipment) supplied by artists
- List of technical requirements for exhibition
- Artists' and/or Curators' CVs
- Visual, Sound or Web Documentation with descriptive list of works
(accepted formats:VHS, DVD, miniDV, NTSC and PAL;CD-ROM, DVD-ROM)
- List of the project's venues if applicable
- Press kit if available

THE MERCURY LOUNGE

The Mercury Lounge, located at 56 Byward in Ottawa, is seeking artistic videos, short films, or other creative ways of transferring image to screen. Artists will not be paid, however this is an exciting opportunity for emerging artists to expose art work at such a vibrant location. The Mercury Lounge hosts events such as World Beats and Eats and supports the local art community.

Video Format:
Videos must be short (app. 5-10 minutes) and looped.
There is no audio available at the moment. We are in the process.
Videos must be submitted in DVD format along with an extra copy.
Include a brief description of your work via e-mail.

Deadline:
Videos will be featured monthly. Submissions are always welcome!

The Telefilm Canada Industry Centre is a four-day professional development series that benefits emerging and established content creators and students. Master classes and panels cover trendsetting and market-driven topics in short film, feature film, television, interactive media and global marketing.

The National Screen Institute – Canada (NSI), with headquarters in Winnipeg, is one of Canada’s nationally-recognized film and television training schools. Over 5,000 people attended the festival in 2006. The 2007 festival will conclude the celebration of NSI’s 20th anniversary.

The Big Sky Documentary Film Festival, the premier venue for nonfiction film in the American West, is seeking submissions for its fourth annual event. The regular deadline for all submissions for the 4th annual festival is September 1, 2006. Entries will be accepted until October 20, 2006, but fees will increase after the September 1 regular deadline.

The competitive event is open to nonfiction films and videos of all genres, subject matter, lengths and production dates. Films and videos with release dates prior to September 1, 2005 are eligible for entry but will screen out of competition if selected. Awards and cash prizes will be given for Best Documentary Feature (over 50 minutes), Best Documentary Short (15-50 minutes), Best Mini-Doc (under 15 minutes) and best documentary about the American West (the "Big Sky Award").

The 4th Annual Big Sky Documentary Film Festival will include more than 100 screenings during the week of February 15-21, 2007. All screenings will be on Montana's largest screen at the historic Wilma Theater in downtown Missoula, Montana. In addition to 7-days of screenings there are many public and VIP events including panel discussions, galas, receptions and networking round tables.

Cineworks Independent Filmmakers Society is seeking an individual with a passion for the media arts to develop and manage programs and services that support the creative vision and priorities of the organization. This includes (but is not limited to) an annual series of workshops, discussions and events (screenings, installations etc.)

Responsibilities:

••Develop program proposals and research and identify potential funding sources
••Provide reports to the Executive Director on programs and services for use in funding applications and strategic planning
••Develop publicity materials and media campaigns
••Manage logistics required for any events or workshops (including finding/managing volunteers)
••Chair the Program Advisory Committee, including calling meetings, preparing agendas, and reports from meetings (The Program Advisory Committee is appointed by the Board on an annual basis and meets as needed or at least twice a year.)
••Conduct orientation sessions for potential new members

Qualifications:

The Program Manager will be an energetic self directed person who is also a team player. The successful candidate will have graduated from a post secondary institution with extensive knowledge of Canadian Media Arts, media artists and current developments and critical issues in the field of media arts. A special interest in film is desirable. Significant experience in all aspects of developing and delivering programs is essential. S/he will possess excellent written and oral communication skills and be well versed in basic computer applications (preferably on a Mac platform) ie; MS Word, Excel,. Filemaker. Familiarity with Photoshop and web applications would be an asset.

Starting September 2006, this is an 8 month contract position with the possibility of becoming permanent.

Hours: 40 hours per week (some flexibility required)

Rate: $15 per hour plus benefits.

Position Summary Reporting to the Executive Director, the Communications and Marketing Manager is responsible for the effective communication of CHRC’s image and messages, and the marketing of CHRC and its products to its members, the cultural sector, and the broader public.

Responsibilities The Communications and Marketing Manager is responsible for developing and implementing a strategic Communications and Marketing plan, and overseeing the related budgets. The position includes responsibility for CHRC’s visual identity; publication of CHRC documents and communiqués; marketing of CHRC and its products; development and maintenance of CHRC’s web site; and relations with the media.

Qualifications Education and Knowledge
* A degree in Communications/ Marketing from a recognized university or an acceptable combination of education, training and experience.
* Knowledge of Canada’s cultural sector
* Knowledge of a variety of computer software applications i.e. word processing, spreadsheets, database and presentation software is essential; .knowledge of HTML,
Photoshop, Adobe Acrobat and Dreamweaver would be considered an asset.
* Knowledge of local and national news media
