SAW VIDEO NEWS:

DIRECTOR'S NOTES
goback

As of this month, SAW Video is 25 years old! OK, no-one's sure of the exact date, but it was sometime in 1981 that SAW Gallery purchased the first 3/4" gear for the video project that became SAW Video. (And despite the recent yardsale, we probably still have some of that original gear kicking around somewhere.) Please join us for our 25th anniversary launch party this Saturday September 9th. Video Arcade will be a blast - we've gathered a very impressive collection of vintage video games. We'll have stations set up in the Gallery for low-impact players and, for the hard-core gamers, competitions in the Club. Come dressed 80's style and play some Frogger! Advance tickets are available at SAW Video.

I have some heart-stopping news to pass on - SAW Video now has a debit machine!!!!!! At long last members can pay their bills the cashless way. Many thanks to Linda Norstrom for perservering on this.

A big welcome to our new technical support staff person, Paul Gordon. Paul will be stepping into Doug's shoes who will be stepping into Ashleigh's shoes, on September 12th. Paul will be with us for one year while Ashleigh is off on maternity leave.

FILM INSTRUCTOR POSITION(S) AT FANSHAWE COLLEGE

Fanshawe College's Advanced Filmmaking Program is currently seeking an instructor to teach two courses: Shooting & Lighting 1 and Editing 1. The courses will cover the subjects as outlined in the descriptions provided below. Ideally, the candidate should have expertise in both shooting and lighting (in the roles of DOP, camera op, gaffer), and Editing (in the role of Editor) using Final Cut Pro editing software. Those candidates with teaching experience are preferred. Candidates with experience for only one of the two subjects may also apply and should specify which course they are interested in teaching.

Applicants must be available to start teaching Sept. 6th, 2006 and are required to commute to Fanshawe College located in London, Ontario once per week (for each course). See schedule listed below.

If you are qualified for the position(s) outlined, please email your resume a.s.a.p. to Joseph Dunlop-Addley, Coordinator, Advanced Filmmaking, Communications Arts. Email: JDunlop-Addley@fanshawec.ca

Shooting & Lighting 1
This course is designed to introduce the student to the operation of the motion picture camera (specifically the Panasonic HVX200 High Definition Camera), lighting and field audio equipment. Theoretical and practical exercises will be completed throughout the semester to improve operational skills. Artificial and natural lighting sources will be utilized as the student experiments with lighting a scene. Throughout the semester each student will light and shoot a series of interview subjects in a variety of locations. Shot composition, camera to subject relationships, continuity and action shooting will be explored as well. The single camera (film style) approach to shooting scenes will be the focus of this course.
Thursdays 8am-11am (3 hours per/week)

Editing 1
This course will introduce the student to non-linear editing for film and television, using Final Cut Pro software. Through a series of projects and practical exercises the student will learn to operate non-linear editing software and hardware. Audio and video editing techniques will be demonstrated, analyzed and critiqued through out the course. Basic editing terminology and technical requirements of post-production will be taught throughout the course. Aesthetic issues of editing such as interacting shots, emotional responses, montage, music selection and use of pacing will also be explored.
Wednesdays 1pm-4pm (3 hours/per week)

presented by the Ottawa Art Gallery
Thursday 14 September at 7:30 pm
Club SAW

Incidences, a media arts DVD by Perte de Signal, 2005 (20 min.) brings together the work of Montreal artists who have marked the Canadian video art landscape with their innovative practice. Generated through the use of digital tools, the selected works and remixes recount processes that oscillate between a defined program and the accidental. From here, a zone of creation is born in which the incidental nourishes the artist and their work. Followed by the official launch of the Cubicules exhibition catalogue. Artists from Perte de signal will be present.
