DIRECTOR'S NOTES
goback

I hope to see many of you at the upcoming Chris Mullington screening at the National Archives theatre (395 Wellington St.) this Saturday, October 28th. There's a pre-screening reception starting at 6:15 and the screening will be at 7pm.

The screening will highlight almost 25 years of Mullington's work, ranging from works created in the early 80's to humourous shorts Chris has produced for such shows as This Hour has 22 Minutes. There will be a Q & A with Chris following the screening.

In this newsletter, we also have announcements for six upcoming workshops, including a new Final Cut Pro workshop. As you can see, our new workshop coordinator, Ariel, is hard at work!

And if you haven't come in to check out our new editing systems, please do so.

In the meantime, hope to see you at the movies,

Penny McCann

THE TELECULTURE OF CHRIS MULLINGTON

Co-presented by SAW Video & the Canadian Film Institute
Curated by Penny McCann
Saturday, October 28th, 2006
National Archives and Library Auditorium, 395 Wellington Street (Ottawa)
Tickets: $6.00 CFI & SAW Video members, students, seniors, children 15 and
under / $9.00 non-member, general public

Screening at 7:00 pm
Prescreening reception at 6:15 pm

(Errata: SAW Video's 25th anniversary brochure mistakenly lists the Chris Mullington screening at 9pm.)

In celebration of SAW Video's 25th anniversary, SAW Video and the Canadian Film Institute are pleased to co-present this spotlight on the work of Ottawa's own Chris Mullington. A founder of SAW Video, Chris Mullington began his career as a video artist in the 1980's and continues to contribute to the art. Now creative director of the Ottawa production company, TV Factory, Mullington's video art aesthetic has strongly influenced his television work which has been widely featured on such shows as CBC's This Hour has 22 Minutes, The Health Show, and CBC Sunday. Fantastic, funny and keenly observational, Mullington's body of work forms a unique teleculture that is smartly political, at times poetic, at times zany, standing as extraordinary visual landmarks on the often monochromatic landscape of television.

The screening will highlight almost 25 years of Mullington's work, ranging from the hypnotic Teleculture, the Teleculture (1983), featuring Willoughby Sharp, a flamboyant denizen of Andy Warhol's Factory Scene; Americans (1987), a collection of dreamlike impressions of a Studebaker ride across the U.S.A.; My Vasectomy (1994), a hilarious animated chronicle of a dreaded medical procedure; Beyond Belief (1998), Mullington's Gemini-nominated documentary about belief in God; and Several Common Coughs (1996), a segment produced for CBC's The Health Show featuring a side-splitting performance by Tom Green.

Chris Mullington will be present at the screening which will be followed by a Q & A with the artist.

Chris Mullington is an internationally recognized video director, editor and producer whose work is exhibited worldwide, in galleries, festivals and on television. His groundbreaking (and now classic) broadcast design work for This Hour Has 22 Minutes set new benchmarks for comedy in a country famous for great comic television. He has won numerous Canadian and international awards for his work in various capacities including a Gemini for his comedic work for CBC TV's The Health Show.

Presented with the financial assistance of the Canada Council for the Arts, which last year invested $12.3 million in media arts throughout Canada.
