Line-Up Announced for SAW Video's Quarter Century Screening!

SAW Video is pleased to announce the artists selected by curator Caroline Seck Langill for SAW Video's 25th anniversary gala screening. After an exhaustive viewing of the centre's archives, the curator selected 19 works that reflect SAW Video's wide-ranging contributions to the field of media art.

Congratulations to the following past and present members:

Get those cameras rolling!

Beginning November 1st, SAW Video members who rent equipment on weekdays (Monday through Thursday) will receive a 25% discount when paying for their rental booking upfront! That means a full camera kit that rents for $75 a day can be rented for only $56.25 a day! The discount period will remain in effect until December 18th, 2006 and applies only to Monday through Thursday rentals.

Equipment Rentals During the Holiday Closure

SAW Video will be closed on December 20th and re-open for regular hours again on January 3rd, 2007. SAW Video will be offering equipment rentals during the holiday closure at half price -- that's two weeks for the price of one! All equipment must be picked up on Tuesday, December 19th before 6pm and returned on Wednesday, January 3rd. In order to receive the 50% discount, payment for the rental must be made in advance at the time of pickup on December 19th. Make your reservations now as our equipment will be booking fast!

This hands on introduction to After Effects will have students complete a few basic projects in order to gain an understanding of this complex and powerful program. 2 Day Intro to Mini-DV Production

By popular demand, SAW Video's classic Introduction to MiniDV Video Production workshop has been expanded to two full days of instruction! This two-day workshop teaches the basics of camera, audio and lighting through hands on training. On the first day of the workshop, participants will receive basic instruction two of SAW Video's prime 3-chip MiniDV cameras – the Panasonic AG-DVX100 and the Sony PD-150. Participants will be introduced to three point lighting and dealing with power on location. A variety of mics will be used and their applications will be discussed. Day two of the workshop provides the added opportunity for more hands on time and instruction. Shooting exercises will be indoors
and outdoors (weather permitting) simulating varying conditions and situations. The second day of the workshop will focus exclusively on the Sony PD-150.

Learn how to get the most out of AVID’s sound tools and export your soundtrack to Adobe Audition for more advanced treatment. Sony HDR-Z1U High Definition Camera Clinic

This three hour evening clinic will serve as an introduction to SAW Video’s newest addition to our video camera arsenal – the Sony HDR-Z1U.

The Z1U is Sony’s first professional grade video camera in the relatively young HDV High Definition video format. It records a compressed High Definition video image on regular MiniDV tapes at a resolution of 1080i. It can also be configured to record in Standard Definition DV. The workshop will cover basic operation of the camera, recording in Standard and HDV modes, attaching external microphones and controlling audio levels, and a brief look at some of the HDR-Z1U’s special camera modes and alternate frame rates. Previous experience with MiniDV video cameras or SAW Video’s other production equipment is recommended but not necessary to take this clinic.

This 3 hour evening clinic is essential for anyone wanting to edit video that has been shot in High Definition and is a great follow up to our HDR-Z1U camera clinic.

The workshop will cover the basics of setting up a project for capturing and exporting HD footage in both Avid Xpress Pro and Final Cut Pro, working with the Sony HDV deck, as well as an overview of the various HD formats, codecs and their benefits.

This clinic is being offered at an intermediate level. Previous knowledge and experience with Avid and Final Cut Pro is a required pre-requisite.

Attention all who like to doodle, tinker and create! The Ottawa International Animation Festival and SAW Video Association present a free hands-on animation workshop for teens aged 13 – 18. This is a chance to get your hands dirty with the stop-motion technique (the same technique used in South Park, Nightmare Before Christmas and Wallace and Gromit), and create your own story using paper cut-outs, plasticine, toys or whatever else you have around the house. You’ll learn about the basic principals of animation and make your very own short animated film.

Call for Submissions: PDX Film Festival

Peripheral Produce is pleased to announce the call for entries for the PDX Film Festival 2007! Please forward to anyone you think may be interested! Thanks!

Portland Documentary and eXperimental Film Festival Peripheral Produce's Sixth Annual Portland Documentary and eXperimental Film Festival is now accepting submissions for its five-day exposition taking place April 25-29, 2007. The PDX FEST is dedicated to showcasing new and innovative work in film and video from around the world. We are looking for artistic, underground, quirky and challenging work that that goes against the grain of mainstream entertainment.

Categories include: experimental, documentary, and underground. Work of all lengths will be considered. Exhibition formats include 35mm, 16mm, Beta SP, and DV. Live, multi-media and performance-based works with a film or video emphasis are also encouraged to submit. Preview copies must be on VHS or DVD (NTSC only, please).

There is a $15 entry fee, and the early deadline is December 15, 2006 (late deadline Jan 19, 2007- late fee applies). Please download both the festival entry guidelines and entry form and read them over carefully.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS

The Factory: Hamilton Media Arts Centre is calling for proposals from Canadian mid-career to established artists to create a new media installation.

The artists selected will be commissioned to create and present a media installation at The Factory: Hamilton Media Arts Centre during the years 2007 to 2008.

The exhibition site is a storefront gallery space with two walls and a storefront window 4" deep by 8" wide by 8" high as dedicated installation space. The installation presentation will be scheduled on a monthly rotation.

The project must be realistic in its proposal to create the installation with limited production and post-production equipment.This includes a multi-purpose room for studio production needs. Further details about equipment available will be provided on request.

DEADLINE: November 20, 2006

Submit:

1. Your project proposal including:

a) thematic and technical concepts,

b) how the creation will benefit the artist or local arts community,

c) other project support images (drawings of installation, etc.)

2. CV

The Department of Film is one of the leaders in film production,
screenwriting, and cinema and media studies in Canada.

Responsibilities of the position will include: teaching a full range of appropriate undergraduate and graduate courses; supervising graduate thesis work; serving on Department, Faculty and University committees; student advising; curriculum development. We welcome a working knowledge of both of Canada's official languages, and the ability to participate in cross-disciplinary doctoral supervisions in: philosophy; women's studies; environmental studies; political science; social and political thought; history;communications and culture.

Salaries will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. This position will commence July 1, 2007 and is subject to budgetary approval.

THE FILMS OF IZABELLA PRUSKA-OLDENHOF


Izabella Pruska-Oldenhof is a Toronto based filmmaker. She is a graduate of the Media Arts Programme at Ryerson University and of the Communication and Culture Programme at York University (MA). Her film and video projects have screened at numerous international film festivals, including: the Toronto International Film Festival; and the New York International Film Festival. Concerned with perception and human experience Oldenhof’s LIGHT MAGIC utilizes and examines one of the earliest photographic processes, the photogram. This technique combines science and art in order to record the process of transformation. Images created through this technique are traces of light that pass through objects leaving marks on the film surface.

In many of Oldenhof’s films exhuberant displays of light reveals fragments of the space in which we are contained, leaving us always waiting in anticipation to see more. Works to be presented include: FUGITIVE LIGHT (2005), HER CARNAL LONGINGS (2003), LIGHT MAGIC (2001), MY I’S (1997), SCINTILLATING FLESH (2003), SEA-ING (2004), SONG OF THE FIREFLY (2002), VIBRANT MARVELS (2000). Izabella Pruska-Oldenhof will attend the screening to introduce and discuss her work.

KHALO MATABANE'S CONVERSATIONS ON A SUNDAY AFTERNOOON

The Available Light Screening collective in collaboration with the Ontario College of Art and Design¹s Integrated Media Program (Toronto) presents South African filmmaker Khalo Matabane¹s Conversations on a Sunday Afternoon. A feature docu-drama, Conversations on a Sunday Afternoon is a fascinating and lyrical journey through Matabane's exploration of the emotional and political landscape of post-apartheid South Africa including the legacy of the Soweto uprising, the impact of AIDS on personal relationships, and the predicament of people from places as varied as Uganda, Palestine and South Korea who flock to Johannesburg in search of refuge. It was awarded the Ecumenical Prize at the 2005 Berlin Film Festival and the Lionel Ngakane Prize at the Sithengi Film Festival.

Khalo Matabane will be present at the screening to talk about his film and about media production in contemporary South Africa. Khalo Matabane resides in Johannesburg, South Africa. He is a versatile, socially-conscious filmmaker who has directed a number of films, including the shorts Poetic Conversations and Love in the Time of Sickness, and the documentaries Two Decades Still, The Waiters, Young Lions and Story of a Beautiful Country. Conversations on a Sunday Afternoon is his first feature film.
