SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

Special Announcement from Linda Norstrom

Dear SAW Video Members,

I was recently presented with an opportunity to take on the position of bookkeeper for the New Democratic Party of Canada and sadly, must announce my departure as Administrative Coordinator with SAW Video, come February 2nd.

Although I am excited for this new challenge in my career, SAW has meant a lot to me both professionally and personally, and a part of me will be leaving with a heavy heart. As many of you may know, I first started working for the organization when it was SAW Gallery Inc. in 1998. Since that time, I have seen the organization through the transition to become SAW Video Association, seen the staff grow from three to five staff (plus several contract positions!), seen the membership double in size, seen many renovations of the physical space (remember the ¾" linear edit suite in the club?), helped with countless projects and initiatives, standardized and organized the financial record keeping and financial management, assisted artists with their projects and developed numerous policies and procedures, to name but a few.

It's impossible to summarize the past eight years into a sentence or paragraph, but it's easy to say that I have seen a phenomenal amount of change and growth within the organization over the years. I am proud to have been a part of this and it has been a privilege to work for one of the largest media arts organizations in Canada.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the many wonderful people that I have worked with over the years including staff, board members, volunteers and artists. SAW Video has been fortunate to be surrounded by people that are passionate about what they do and I have seen a lot of heart and soul poured into this centre. It has been nothing short of inspirational!

SAW Video is currently in good hands and I am confident that the organization will continue to grow and become an even stronger organization over the coming years. I wish nothing but the best for SAW Video both in the present and the future.

Sincerely,

Linda Norstrom

Artist Residency
Research and Creation
Support for First Works
Photography and Digital Imaging

Located in the La Filature building - a former magnificently renovated industrial textile mill - DAÏMÔN offers creation, production and dissemination resources in the areas of media arts and photography. Slightly at a distance from the large urban centers, DAÏMÔN is a creative environment in the Outaouais region which is conducive to the research and development of small as well as large scale artistic projects.

By way of its programs Artiste résident, (resident artist), Recherche et création, (research and development), Photographie et impression numérique (photography and digital printing) and Soutien aux premières œuvres, (support for first works), DAÏMÕN encourages artists to push the limits of their practice and to develop new approaches with image, video, as well as sound and electronic art, including installation, interactive and performative practices.

With its STUDIÕ, production and exhibition spaces, DAÏMÕN encourages the materialization and installation of, and experimentation with, works of significant scale as well as the development of transversal practices. Public and informal meetings are regularly organized in order to allow the local community to familiarize itself with the work of artists in residence.

DAÏMÕN provides artists with access to image and sound recording equipment and digital audio and video editing suites. A darkroom enables large scale (1m 32) silver emulsion development from negatives of up to 280 mm. A digital printing service (EPSON Stylus 9600 Pro) is also available.

CREATION PROGRAMS

Artist Residency
Offered to professional artists outside the Ottawa-Gatineau region, this program aims to promote fruitful exchange between artists from here and elsewhere. Established, mid-career artists with at least five years of active and significant practice are invited to apply.

A multipurpose STUDIÕ is available to resident artists for the experimentation, production and presentation of work requiring a specific technical infrastructure. DAÏMÕN organises a public presentation, including a brief exhibition at the STUDIÕ and an evening artist’s talk, in which the artist presents their past and present work.

For each of the projects the centre provides a residency of 4 to 6 weeks including accommodation, access to the Centre’s equipment, and the services of a technician (60 hours), as well as covering the cost of cassettes, disks and duplication. An artist’s fee of $1200 is provided. In some cases, DAÏMÕN is also able to provide travel allowance and cover limited daily expenses. All other production costs are the responsibility of the artist.

Research and Creation
Open to professional emerging, mid-career or established artists. DAÏMÕN selects six artists annually, four from the Ottawa-Gatineau region and two from elsewhere. The Centre encourages applications from artists from non-central Francophone communities.

DAÏMÕN privileges projects emphasising the increasingly complex interrelations between media and those that push the limits of intermedia rather than simply addressing the vocabulary of the chosen media. Only projects involving a degree of research will be considered.

DAÏMÕN provides each artist with technical and artistic support, access to the Centre’s equipment for four (4) weeks and the services of a technician (50 hours). All other production costs are the responsibility of the artist. A selection of projects produced in the context of this programme is included in the Centre’s exhibition schedule and will be shown at the start of the following season.

Photography and Digital Imaging
This program aims to improve the support offered to artists working on paper using darkroom or digital imaging techniques. DAÏMÕN privileges projects emphasising the increasingly complex interrelations between media and those that push the limits of intermedia rather than simply addressing the vocabulary of the chosen media. Only projects involving a degree of research will be considered.

DAÏMÕN provides each artist with technical and artistic support, access to the Centre’s equipment for two (2) weeks and the services of a technician (15 hours). All other production costs are the responsibility of the artist. Artists using darkroom facilities must provide their own development chemicals and photographic paper.

Support for First Works
DAÏMÕN continues its support for the production of a first work for three artists from the Ottawa-Gatineau region and is piloting a new mentoring program for emerging artists. Admissible projects include the production of an original work using video or the application of hybrid media in artwork, fiction, essays, documentary or experimental work.

Young artists from the Ottawa-Gatineau region with basic training are invited to apply to create a first work in photo, video or new media in a professional context. Professional artists from the Ottawa-Gatineau region with an established practice in another discipline (painting, sculpture, photography, installation, etc.) who wish to develop a production in video or new media are also encouraged to apply.

DAÏMÕN provides each artist with technical and artistic support, access to the Centre’s equipment for three (3) weeks and the services of a technician (40 hours). All other production costs are the responsibility of the artist. A selection of projects produced in the context of this programme is included in the Centre’s exhibition schedule and will be shown at the start of the following season

JASON ST-LAURENT'S GOING-AWAY PARTY

Date Saturday, January 20, 2007, from 8PM to 1AM
Location Club SAW (67 Nicholas Street, Ottawa)
Free admission. DJs and performances TBA.

Dear friends and patrons of SAW,

As you may have heard, our colleague Jason St-Laurent is leaving his position of Programmer at SAW Video to take on a new challenge in Toronto as Director of Programming for the Inside Out Gay & Lesbian Film & Video Festival.

Jason has been involved with SAW for more than six years, first as the chair of the Galerie SAW Gallery board, then as SAW Video's first programmer. The media art screenings and exhibitions that he curated at SAW were met with both critical and popular success, drawing all kinds of new audiences to our centre. In particular, Jason has cultivated a queer audience for SAW, and it is no surprise that he has been entrusted with a job at the largest queer film festival in Canada. Although we will greatly miss him, we wish him much success in his new position.

Come toast Jason's departure in what is sure to be a raucus and randy party! All proceeds from the bar will go to the Divergence queer film series and to the collective Agitate! Queer Women of Colour.

RSVPs are appreciated, but not necessary. Please e-mail Tam-Ca Vo-Van at sawprogramming@artengine.ca.

FÊTE EN HONNEUR DE JASON ST-LAURENT

Date Le samedi 20 janvier 2007, de 20 h à 1 h
Lieu Club SAW (67 Nicholas Street, Ottawa)

Queer Women of Colour.

RSVP : Veuillez confirmer votre présence en envoyant un courriel à Tam-Ca Vo-Van à sawprogramming@artengine.ca (les confirmations sont appréciées, mais la soirée est ouverte à toutes et à tous).

HOODWINKED: THE MYTH OF FREE TRADE
goback

Hoodwinked: The Myth of Free Trade

screening in Ottawa with special guest DAVID ORCHARD

OTTAWA - Did you know that the Canadian post office is currently being sued by an American corporation under the rules of NAFTA?

Free trade or subtle sellout? The feature documentary Hoodwinked: The Myth of Free Trade examines some of the less-talked-about effects of free trade and corporate globalization on Canada. It was produced by West/Dunn Productions of Ottawa.

There will be a special screening in Ottawa, on Wednesday, January 31, 2007
at the National Library and Archives Auditorium
395 Wellington St.
7:00 pm
Admission $8.00
93 minutes followed by a discussion with the filmmakers
and special guest DAVID ORCHARD, author of The Fight for Canada

There's more to these trade deals than the matter of tariffs. Are you a university graduate wondering where all the good jobs are? Have you recently been laid off from a good manufacturing job and told to re-train as a call centre answer-person? Do you ever wonder why Canada can’t meet its Kyoto targets? What do you think will drive Canada’s economy when the oil is gone? And why are we told we can’t afford a public healthcare system anymore?

Here's the analysis of free trade that our elites are afraid to have. After 18 years, it's time to take stock.

Hoodwinked: The Myth of Free Trade features interviews with people who know about the issue like former prime minister John Turner, political economist Stephen Clarkson, organic farmer and author David Orchard (who brought 140 delegates to Stéphane Dion’s leadership bid) and economist Jim Stanford.

Hoodwinked: The Myth of Free Trade was produced by Bill Dunn and Linda West of West/Dunn Productions. Their previous work includes a bilingual digital history of Canada called A Country by Consent / Un pacte, un pays. They have also produced prime time documentaries broadcast nationally on CBC-TV.
