DIRECTOR'S NOTES

ADVOCATE FOR MORE FUNDING FOR THE ARTS IN OTTAWA!

As some of you may have heard, an Arts Investment Strategy proposal was brought forward for funding approval in the City budget deliberations. This Strategy has come about as a result of much hard work by many individuals, arts groups and City staff. Included in the Arts Investment Strategy is a recommendation that the City of Ottawa invest $2.5 million in the arts over the next four years with $1.5 million to be approved in 2007.

After years of cutbacks and inadequate funding levels, Ottawa is now last among the major cities in Canada for per capita funding of the arts. With this proposed increased to the arts, we will achieve an "average" level of
funding. Oh to be average!

The AIS was passed resoundingly by Committee of Council and will go to full Council next week - February 14th. But it will not pass without a strong show of support from the community. Please take a moment to write the mayor and all the councillors, urging them to support this Arts Investment Strategy.

I've attached a sample email below and all addresses for easy cutting and pasting.

Even better, give your own councillor or the mayor a call and let them know how important this strategy is to everyone in the Ottawa arts community.

Thanks

Penny McCann

**************************************************************************

Dear Councillors,

It is clear that for years Ottawa has lagged behind other similar cities in Arts and Culture funding. The average investment for cities of our stature is $6.23 per capita and Ottawa's spending in $3.64 per capita.

This results in the inability of Ottawa's cultural groups to attract millions of matching funding from Provincial & Federal governments and other groups.

It is essential that the proposed Arts Investment Strategy be approved by City Council to invest $2.5 million over the next four years with $1.5 million to be approved in 2007.

Sincerely,

Sat February 24th, 2007
10:00am - 5:00pm

Sun February 25th, 2007
10:00am - 5:00pm

One of the most important elements of any video is the quality of the sound. A clear recording made in the field can make or break your production.

This workshop is for people with an interest in developing skills and an understanding of how sound recording works for video and film production.

The most important elements and skills of sound recording will be taught and practised "hands on" by participants. This will include how to hook up your sound equipment to various cameras, mike techniques and types, working with lighting, and getting the best sound possible. The course will also touch on best practises when working in professional situations.

Previous experience and a basic understanding of DV production is a required prerequisite for this workshop.

Limited to 9 participants. Deadline for registration is Monday February 19th, 2007. Book early, this workshop will fill up fast!

Instructor: Kate Kechnie

Kate Kechnie is a location sound recordist for television in the Ottawa area. Working with sound since 1979, she has at times been a CBC radio technician, music studio owner and live concert engineer. HIP HOP 360
goback
WANTED !!!
Lead designer for the Canada Dance Festival’s event HIP HOP 360.

Think you have what it takes?

The Canada Dance festival will be making history in June 2007 by putting bboying front and centre as part of Canada’s contemporary dance repertoire. From June 20 to 23, audiences will be exposed to the contagious electricity of a dance event like nothing Canada has seen before. If you can imagine the defying movements of bboying, the urban style of graffiti artists and the hype of some of Canada’s best DJs and MCs together on stage in a series of live indoor/outdoor performances, you’re imagining HIP HOP 360.

We are looking for a designer to come up with “the look” for our Hip hop event. To qualify, all you have to do is submit an original design image for HIP HOP 360. The logo is meant to catch someone’s eye through its simplicity and attractiveness while, at the same time, embodying the style/culture of the event. Essentially, we’re looking for something clean, urban, exciting, simple, and stylish. Colors – sketched – drawn – silhouettes – fonts – design – is all up to you.

Submission requirements:

A) Your Design: An image suitable for flyers, postcards, electronic promotion, etc., which incorporates the following elements:

Text is to appear in both French and English as listed below.
1. Name of Event : “Hip Hop 360” (see note)
2. Name of Presenter : “Canada Dance Festival / Festival Danse Canada” (see note)
3. Event Date : “June 20 – 23 juin 2007”
4. The Canada Dance Festival and National Arts Centre logos (an approximate rendition is acceptable in the proposal, but will have to be replaced by “the real thing” if your design wins)

Note: Ideally, the text says:
“Canada Dance Festival presents / Festival Danse Canada présente Hip Hop 360”
However, we are willing to waive this requirement as long as the Festival’s name and the event’s name are both included in the design.

B) Design Resume (name, contact details, experience etc.)

C) Inspiration for logo (No longer than 250 words)

If you’re chosen you will play an instrumental role in the production of HIP HOP 360. Your name will appear as the event’s lead creative art designer with the added cash prize of $275.00.

Submission Deadline
Friday February 16th by 5:00 p.m.
