Video Pool Media Arts Centre
Call for Submissions 2007/08 Programming
Theme Off the Grid: The Creative Misuse of Technology

Deadline: March 23, 2007

Contemporary culture is permeated by a fascination with media and trends in consumer electronics. Media artists often follow their own fascination with technology and its creative potential into uncharted territory. In an effort to free themselves from the technical and aesthetic restraints of conventional approaches, artists create new processes, strategies and systems for dealing with media. Technology is creatively misused and
repurposed; found or antiquated media is reused and reinterpreted; and traditional approaches to media are hacked, bent and reprogrammed to create unique artistic results.

Video Pool is inviting submissions on the theme Off the Grid: The Creative Misuse of Technology for the 2007/08 programming season.

Video Pool invites submissions of:

New Media

Experimental Electronics

Installation (with media components)

"Winters of Discontent"

Curated by Brett Kashmere
Presented by the Available Light Screening Collective
Friday February 23rd 2007 at 7:30pm
Club SAW, 67 Nicholas Street (at Daly Avenue)
Ottawa, Ontario
Admission: $5 or $3 students & unwaged

"Hockey is part of life in Canada. Thousands play it, millions follow it, and millions more surely try their best to avoid it altogether. But if they do, their disregard must be purposeful, one of conscious escape, for hockey's evidences are everywhere... in Canada, hockey is one of winter's expectations." (Ken Dryden and Roy MacGregor, Home Game)

Hockey has often been employed as a symbol of national unity, an indicator of Canadian values, and an instrument of foreign policy. To question or renounce our common assumptions is one way to become conscious of what might have been automatically and habitually accepted before. Such is the case with hockey, as the power of the sport's imagery in the national imagination is impossible to deny.

The Friday February 23rd screening of "Winters of Discontent" brings together revisionist video-essays about the undercurrents of Canada's national game. Curator and artist Brett Kashmere will be in attendance to introduce and discuss the video works in the program.

Program:

"Valery's Ankle" by Brett Kashmere (33 minutes, digital video, 2006)

In September 1972 Canadian hockey pros faced the amateur Soviets for the first time ever. Canada's victory in this famous Cold War showdown, thanks to a last-minute winning goal, has become the most celebrated Canadian tale of all time. But the games were also marked by extreme acts of violence that are only subconsciously remembered. Team Canada’s performance throughout the series and Bobby Clarke’s two-handed slash of rival Russian star Valery Kharlamov’s ankle, in particular, signal a “glitch” in the production of Canadian nationalism, identity, and masculinity.

"Valery's Ankle" explodes the spectacle of hockey violence and its representation in North American media -- from Eddie Shore’s vicious, career-ending hit on Ace Bailey, to Clarke’s pre-emptive smashing of Kharlamov’s ankle, to Todd Bertuzzi’s revenge assault on Steve Moore -- filmmaker Brett Kashmere uncovers a disturbing history of unforetold and abject Canadian behaviour.

"Death by Popcorn: The Tragedy of the Winnipeg Jets" by l'Atelier National du Manitoba (61 minutes, digital video, 2006)

CFC

Peppered with action-packed cameos by Winnipeg All-Stars Dale Hawerchuk, Burton Cummings, Teemu Selanne, Billy Van, and a recent interview with the man who sent the Jets straight into the jaws of death by throwing a cataclysmic box of popcorn onto the ice in Game 6 of the 1990 Stanley Cup playoffs, "Death by Popcorn" follows the ill-fated Jets through their many travails with "arch-enemies" Wayne Gretzky and the Edmonton Oilers, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, and many other agents of Winnipeg annihiliation. Sadness on ice! The CBC has described the film as, "Somewhere between earnestness and irony, high comedy and high art, love, and loss."

L'Atelier National du Manitoba contends that the ironic epic of the Winnipeg Jets NHL hockey team seems to mirror the mysterious tragedy of Winnipeg history itself. Both tell a story about people whose triumph was short-lived, whose defeat was monumental, whose drama was played out upon a cruel bed of ice, and who, at the end of their lives, moved to far away Phoenix, Arizona.

The "Winters of Discontent" program will also include the short "Colonel Canuck" by Jake Kennedy (2:25 minutes, digital video, 2003).

About the Artists

Brett Kashmere grew up playing hockey on the Canadian prairies. He is a filmmaker who now lives in Central New York and writes extensively about avant-garde cinema, music and video, curates international exhibitions, and teaches experimental film. www.brettkashmere.com

Below is Deco in his own words, on what he'll be discussing:

"Filmmaking is generally considered the most engaging of all art forms and the most popular in terms of accessibility and scope, yet with this comes the many outside expectations of broad entertainment. Winnipeg filmmaker Deco Dawson will discuss how we as filmmakers can remain fiercely independent by looking back at the films and filmmakers working from within “the system” over the past 80 years, and how their relatively ground breaking, yet totally mainstream styles can be incorporated into modern filmmaking. Deco will be presenting clips from such movies as Night of the Hunter, Playtime, 42nd Street, Vertigo and others, while also referencing clips from his own filmography. Deco will speak for 3 hours, sharing his insight into independent filmmaking, style and his love of the screen.
