Balcone Art Society

bal.co.ny

Pronunciation: bal-ko-nE
Function: noun
One: a platform that projects from the wall of a building and is
enclosed by a railing
Two: an interior projecting gallery in a public building (as a theatre)
Etymology: origin of Old Italian word BALCONE, meaning large window

Balcone is a newly incorporated non-profit society for contemporary art based out of Vancouver. Emerging Canadian artists working in any
medium and pursuing their practice on a professional basis are invited to answer Balcone's first annual call for submissions.

Our vision is to create a unique context - outside of traditional frameworks - for the practice, curation, and exhibition of
contemporary art in Vancouver and beyond.

Our mission is to support and promote emerging Canadian artists by focusing on curation, exhibition, research, criticism, and the
development of a professional practice. By programming a spectrum of events which challenge conventional exhibition frameworks, we aim to
facilitate an engagement between contemporary artists and a diverse audience - local and national - and secure a more prominent place for
art in the everyday. Twelve emerging artists will be accepted annually to actively participate in Balcone programming in Vancouver.
An emphasis will be placed on the development of a meaningful professional practice by exploring models of collaboration, through a
system of mentoring, and exhibitions of work in alternative spaces.
Twelve artists will be selected by Balcone's directors to participate
and collaborate in our first year of programming. Accepted artists will have a hosted profile and portfolio on Balcone's website, will participate in a series of workshops and plenary sessions with the aim of accelerating professional development, and will be available
for a group exhibition of new work from Balcone artists in Vancouver during September 2007. By mentoring, promoting and publishing these
artists and their works, Balcone's directors aim to provide new territory for the support and development of emerging artists in Canada.

To be considered for inclusion in our 2007-2008 programs please submit the following information via email to submissions@balcone.org
with the subject line reading 2007-08:

- curriculum vitae, recent, including full contact information and
weblinks to show archives, if applicable.
- artist statement, 500 words.
- 10x12 examples of work with descriptions, including title, date,
medium. We prefer weblinks pointing to the artist's own hosted
portfolio, though where this is not possible we shall accept
attachments of low-resolution JPEG's, Quicktime movies or AIFFs to a
total of fifteen megabytes per applicant.

Full time students are not eligible. Only email submissions will be
accepted.

The deadline is May 1st, 2007, at 5:00 pm PST.

IFCO's INDIE FILMMAKER SERIES PRESENTS:

AN ARTIST TALK WITH DECO DAWSON

When: Monday, March 5th, 2007
Where: IFCO Lounge
Time: 6:30pm - 9:30pm
Cost: $20 IFCO & SAW Video Members/$25.00 Non-Members

On Monday, March 5th guest filmmaker Deco Dawson will be in town to give an artist talk at IFCO. Q & A session to follow talk. Since 1998 Winnipeg filmmaker Deco Dawson has been making surreal, award-winning short films in a wide range of styles, covering a variety of subjects. Below is Deco in his own words, on what he'll be discussing:

"Filmmaking is generally considered the most engaging of all art forms and the most popular in terms of accessibility and scope, yet with this comes the many outside expectations of broad entertainment. Winnipeg filmmaker Deco Dawson will discuss how we as filmmakers can remain fiercely independent by looking back at the films and filmmakers working from within “the system” over the past 80 years, and how their relatively ground breaking, yet totally mainstream styles can be incorporated into modern filmmaking. Deco will be presenting clips from such movies as Night of the Hunter, Playtime, 42nd Street, Vertigo and others, while also referencing clips from his own filmography. Deco will speak for 3 hours, sharing his insight into independent filmmaking, style and his love of the screen. Deco will take questions and topics from the audience throughout his talk, so come for an open discussion with one of Canada’s most fascinating and daring young artists".

DECO DAWSON SCREENING

CFC

On Tuesday, March 6th, Deco will be screening some of his award winning films at Club SAW through IFCO and the Available Light Screening Collective. The screening will feature some of Dawson's top films including: FILM(dzama) about pop artist Marcel Dzama winner of the Best Short Film Award at the 2001 Toronto International Film Festival; FILM(knout) the winner of The Chicago Underground Film Festival Best Experimental Film prize, and its uncharacteristic, mystical sequel The Fever of the Western Nile. Other films to be screened include Defile in Veil, Dumb Angel and his latest short Elizabeth Short, which he premiered at the 2006 Toronto International Film Festival. Elizabeth Short, is a sensitive yet evocative portrait of the 1947 Black Dahlia murder victim.

Has it been four years since the U.S. envaded Iraq? Lets start at the beginning... with the feature length documentary by Matt Frame, Paul Gordon and Adam Bowick

CFC

With a $10,000 budget, but with a sense of humour and an enormous amount of determination, director Matt Frame and his two-man strong crew of Paul Gordon and Adam Bowick set out on an incredible journey. The team leaves the snowy Canadian village of Yellowknife, destined to reach Baghdad in time for the war that is bound to, and does, break out. Their goal is to document "regular" people's opinion on the impending war, and Frame does so with incredible wit and humour.

Screening one time only at Club SAW (67 Nicholas St.) 7:30pm, Digital Video (70mins), Pay what you can

CFCCFC

"Baghdad or Bust is a satirical comedy that chronicles three young Canadian film makers from Yellowknife as they travel
from Northern Canada to the Middle East just as the Iraq war is erupting. As well as being very funny, it is also quite thought
provoking..." New York Times

"Matt Frame plays the goof ball guerrilla interviewer, engaging in cheeky repartee with Turkish rug merchants
and Kurdish refugees. But behind the posture as a hick from the Great White North lurks a sharp political wit." Macleans Magazine

"Baghdad or Bust is a funny, poignant piss take on the war in Iraq." Aaron Spitzer, CBC TV

"It’s a fun, political primer for those who skip the nightly news. These improvised and often indirectly political portraits save
the film from becoming yet another pointless road trip documentary." Mike Armitage, Chart Attack
