6:00pm - 9:00pm

Video artist Tasman Richardson is the founder of the JAWA style of rhythmic collage video. This innovative editing style, inspired by the “cut ups/fold ups” literary technique, is the logical next step and natural heir of the Burroughs/Gysin analysis into the destruction and recontextual-isation of mainstream media.

In this unique hands-on workshop participants will learn to:

- Assemble beats and melodies using video edits

- Create track composites for added complexity

- Appropriate elusive or unstable video signals

- Develop concepts for video collage projects

- Apply JAWA philosophy of audience communication and manipulation

The hands on components to this workshop will be taught using Final Cut Pro with instructor supplied video clips.

This workshop is being delivered at the intermediate to advanced level. Previous knowledge and understanding of digital postproduction and NLE is a recommended pre-requisite.

Enrollment limited to 5 people. Deadline for registration is Monday April 2nd.

Instructor: Tasman Richardson

Tasman Richardson has been a practicing video artist, electronic composer, designer, and curator for over a decade. He has exhibited and performed extensively throughout the Americas, Europe, Scandinavia, North Africa and Asia, and currently lives in Toronto, Canada. He is the founder of the JAWA style of rhythmic scavenger collage video (1996) and co-founder of the FAMEFAME media arts collective (2002). His work focuses on the spectacle of our tele-visionary existence, the re-unification of sound and image, subliminal composition and the capture of elusive digital refuse.

NFB CROSS-MEDIA CHALLENGE

The National Film Board of Canada launched its new NFB CROSS-MEDIA CHALLENGE at the Canadian Film and Television Production Association's Prime Time 2007 conference, on February 22 in Ottawa.

The NFB CROSS-MEDIA CHALLENGE is a co-production competition for innovative, interactive, socially engaged content with applications for mobile and broadband. It will award one Canadian producer a $10,000 co-production development deal with the NFB. Deadline for applications is Friday, May 4, 2007. The winner will be announced at the Banff World Television Festival, June 11-14, 2007.

"NFB leads the way in emerging platforms, bringing the values of social engagement to new media and helping to generate a new cinematic language.
We're forging creative partnerships with independent producers. We're creating online communities. The NFB CROSS-MEDIA CHALLENGE builds on these
breakthroughs and offers us a new way of partnering with Canadian content creators in defining the new audiovisual landscape," says Tom Perlmutter,
Director General of NFB English Program. "

About the Challenge
Inspired by the National Film Board's legendary Challenge for Change program of community filmmaking, today's NFB is adapting the adage of "think
globally, act locally" to develop socially engaged media projects relating to issues such as the protection of the environment (global warming), health
care, human rights, poverty and violence against women.
How can we inspire an exchange of story-telling practices among diverse
communities? How can we foster a dialogue on issues that have local roots by the creative use of media? How can we unleash creative talents of marginal voices and communities and make them heard?

Eligible projects must be cross-platform and multi-platform concepts, creating user engagement through the innovative use of digital networks and
devices as well as demonstrating direct points of contact and interaction with Canadian communities.

Submissions details
A three page proposal should provide a succinct overview of the project, a development plan and development budget summary along with any supporting audio-visual material. To be eligible, proposals must be received by 5:00 pm (ET) on Friday, May 4, 2007.

McLibel

UK / 2005 release / 85 Minutes / Produced and directed by Franny Armstrong.

This outstanding documentary shows all the aspects of anti-corporate activism via the real life story of two UK activists who wouldn’t say McSorry: Helen Steel (gardner) and David Morris (postman). They represented themselves against the McDonald Corporation’s $19 million legal team and won, in the largest corporate image fiasco ever and the longest trial in English legal history. This is why we no longer have to look over our shoulders when we suggest that maybe Big Macs are not all that nutritious…

BRUCE ELDER SCREENING

Screening of Eros and Wonder

In conjunction with the Governor General’s Awards in Visual and Media Arts, a screening of the film Eros and Wonder by recipient R. Bruce Elder will take place Saturday 24 March at 1:30 p.m. in the Lecture Hall of the National Gallery of Canada. Admission to the screening is free

Please be advised that the film Eros and Wonder contains mature subject matter.

Bruce Elder is a filmmaker, critic and teacher of film studies at Ryerson University. Described by New York filmmaker and critic Jonas Meklas as “the most important North American avant-garde filmmaker to emerge during the 1980s,” Elder combines images, music and text to create works that reflect his interest in philosophy, technology, science, spirituality and the human body. His first major film cycle of twenty films, The Book of All the Dead, inspired by Dante Alighieri’s Commedia and Ezra Pound’s Cantos, grew out of his preoccupation with the horrors of modernity, its faith in progress and the loss of a sense of what is good and evil. His current film cycle, The Book of Praise, makes extensive use of computer-image generation, highlighting his fascination with mathematics and digital technology. Elder has been a guest lecturer at institutions across North America and around the world and has written books and articles on film, music, poetry and the visual arts. He is the winner of the 2007 Governor General’s Awards in Visual and Media Arts.

Présentation du film Eros and Wonder
