Video Vulture Culture and Musical Editing Workshop

with Tasman Richardson (Toronto)
Thursday April 4th, 6-9pm.
Club SAW, 67 Nicholas Street

Artengine and SAW Video are pleased to present Video Vulture Culture and Musical Editing Workshop as part of SMASH - a speed driven evening of audio-visual performance mash-ups.

Please note this workshop is offered free of charge to SAW Video and Artengine members.

Register in advance with Artengine.
email: operations@artengine.ca

Telephone: 613-482-0119

Description:
Video artist Tasman Richardson is the founder of the JAWA style of rhythmic collage video. This innovative editing style, inspired by the “cut ups/fold ups” literary technique, is the logical next step and natural heir of the Burroughs/Gysin analysis into the destruction and recontextual-isation of mainstream media.

In this unique hands-on workshop participants will learn to:

- Assemble beats and melodies using video edits
- Create track composites for added complexity
- Appropriate elusive or unstable video signals
- Develop concepts for video collage projects
- Apply JAWA philosophy of audience communication and manipulation

The hands on components to this workshop will be taught using Final Cut Pro with instructor supplied video clips.

This workshop is being delivered at the intermediate to advanced level. Previous knowledge and understanding of digital postproduction and NLE is a recommended pre-requisite.

Instructor: Tasman Richardson

Tasman Richardson has been a practicing video artist, electronic composer, designer, and curator for over a decade. He has exhibited and performed extensively throughout the Americas, Europe, Scandinavia, North Africa and Asia, and currently lives in Toronto, Canada. He is the founder of the JAWA style of rhythmic scavenger collage video (1996) and co-founder of the FAMEFAME media arts collective (2002). His work focuses on the spectacle of our tele-visionary existence, the re-unification of sound and image, subliminal composition and the capture of elusive digital refuse.

Council for the Arts in Ottawa

Hello Members,

Let's shed our layers and expose ourselves to the coming season of fresh and inspiring cultural events. Enjoy the liberation!

Know of an Extraordinary Local Artist who Merits Recognition?
The Council for the Arts in Ottawa is once again putting out a call for nominations for their annual CAO Mid-Career Artist Award. Media artist and filmmaker Ryan Stec was the recipient of the inaugural award in 2006. He was presented with a cash prize of $1,000 at the 2007 Sweetheart Lunch for the Arts, the CAO's annual fundraiser, at the National Gallery.

Nominated artists must have lived in the National Capital Region for at least three years, are involved in Ottawa's arts community as a professional artist and are at a break-through, or mid-career, point in their careers as evidence by their body of work. Artists cannot nominate themselves. It is also strongly recommended that the nominator submit a C.V. or detailed biography of the nominated artist's work, or have the artist submit such information separately.

Deadline for nominations is Friday, May 4, 2007 at noon. The winning recipient will be presented with the award at the CAO's Annual General Meeting in June.

For more details, please consult the CAO's terms of reference for this award.

Corel Endowment Fund for the Arts Award

Take a look at the possibilities of the Corel Endowment Fund for the Arts Award. This award assists artists in all disciplines. This year's deadline for applications is April 27, 2007.

The award was established at the Community Foundation of Ottawa in 1997 through the combined fundraising efforts of the CAO and Corel Corporation. The first awards were presented in 1998. To date, the fund has contributed to 24 artists' projects.

Please visit our website for details or contact the CAO office at council@arts-ottawa.on.ca or 569-1387.

Artengine presents SMASH - a speed driven evening of audio-visual performance mash-ups.

Each of these unique audio-visual performances will bring a fresh heart pounding aesthetic to their cinematic acts of cultural subversion. Beyond cross-fading between a few fancy remixes, this evening promises to pound pop into a new immersive presentation of intelligent dance music and broken video beats.

After years of casual collaborations, Jacob Hanna and Chris Ikonomopoulos have focused their energy on the creation of a dark and atmospheric performance. This brooding work draws on drum n' base and glitch influences, mixed with the meaningless aural landscape of scientific language, to create a sparse and intense composition.

From remixes of hip-hop and rock n' roll classics to smash-ups of Rockstar Games and B-Movie horror flicks, Tasman Richardson performance will take the audience on an unrelenting subliminal critique of inconceivable connections in popular media. This is cultural conspiracy theory at 160 beats per minute.

To round off this audio-visual speed walk DJ BEARwitness and VJ Daisy will serve up a dance-able digest-able reflection on the mash-up. Like an expensive digestif this pair will cleanse your palette and send you back into the world refreshed and invigorated.

Please join us for a unique evening of pop perversions and musical montages as these artists shape the mainstream into a new cultural flow.
