NEW CAMERA AT SAW VIDEO

SAW Video has recently acquired a new HDV class camera for rental to members! The Sony HVR-V1U HDV camcorder offers all the same features of the Z1U in addition to 24p recording options in both HDV and standard miniDV recording modes. The V1U is the identical body shape and size to the venerable Sony PD-150/170 and should feel familiar to anyone that has experience with those cameras. The new V1U camera will be offered to members at the same rental rates as our existing compliment -- $50 a day or $75 for a weekend.

If you would like further information about the Sony HVR-V1U, you can check out the official Sony marketing blurb or better yet, give us a call and try out the camera for yourself!

Be sure to book your equipment reservations for the summer as soon as possible! Weekend rental dates are prime real estate and they are going fast!

Vernissage - Satellite by Nelson Henricks
Friday, April 20th from 8pm to midnight

Satellite will screen April 20-21 and May 3-4 2007 from dusk to midnight in SAW's historic courtyard, 67 Nicholas Street, Ottawa.
SAW Video is proud to present Satellite by Nelson Henricks as part of the National Arts Centre's Quebec Scene. In Henricks' work, the interplay of images with words reveals a lucid personality in search of transcendence. In Satellite this interplay is modulated by the artist's use of electronic music where the poetic dialogue of elements articulates a new form of technological lyricism.

The performances are filmed against diverse backdrops, from the thundering cataracts of Hog’s Back to a calm Buddhist mediation centre; from Archibald Lampman’s grave to Glebe Collegiate high school. The results prove to be quite colourful – evidence of a wealth of expression from a city that has a reputation for being shy in matters of passion and the heart. The political daring and freedom-loving experimentation of these writers, many of whom are staples of the Ottawa literary scene, testifies to the health of Canadian poetry. Indeed, such was the overwhelming rawness of the poetic rush experienced by the filmmakers that by the end of the process they had decided to get engaged and change their last names to Poetry. Well, they almost went that far. What they did marry was their knowledge of film and poetry. The result is Heard of Poets.

The Vidéo-art of Robert Morin
Presented by the Available Light Screening Collective

Programmed by Phil Rose

Tuesday April 24th 2007 at 7:30pm Club SAW, 67 Nicholas St, Ottawa

Admission $5 / $3 students and un/under-employed

For more than twenty years now Montreal-based Robert Morin, “le gars de gang et de vues”, has crafted a prolific and diverse body of work spanning and mixing many genres, creatively and compassionately painting the great drama of humanity. He has constantly sought out new ways of telling his stories, provocatively taking on new technologies and political and societal issues with humour and urgency.

The Available Light Screening Collective presents a program of four of his short videos from the eighties – Gus est encore dans l’armée, Le Voleur vit en enfer, Toi t’es tu lucky?, and Mauvais mal. These seminal experimental video works provide a fascinating key to the rich and inventive body of feature film work that Morin continues to pursue.

Robert Morin will be in attendance.

The Available Light Screening Collective is an Ottawa-based artists' collective committed to the presentation and curation of experimental film, video and new media art. Funding for its activities is received from the Canada Council for the Arts, the Ontario Arts Council and the City of Ottawa.
