MISS YOU
a brand new tape by Mike Hoolboom
(5 min/2007/DV)
May 10th evening
May 11th 10am-5pm
Free admission

Miss You returns to the early days of video art with a one camera/one person performance. In a direct address to camera,
the artist/performer speaks in the second person, to "you," which is the viewing audience, the spectator. This direct address is related to "you" and to the space of representation which the speaker occupies. It is a love story of representation.

Artist's bio
Born in Toronto, 1959. Prolific and protean, Mike Hoolboom has produced over 40 films, ranging from experimental shorts to daring feature-length dramas (Kanada, Valentine's Day and House of Pain). Often cinematically breathtaking, Hoolboom's works are as visually inventive as Derek Jarman's and as apolitically courageous as Pier Paolo Pasolini's in their exploration of the
troubling intersections of desire, the body, the world, and the nation-state in the chaotic, fearful late 20th century. A major talent whose work has been acclaimed here and abroad, Hoolboom captured the best short film award at the 1996 Toronto International Festival for his film about living with HIV, Letters From Home." - Tom McSorley, Take One

CAFÉ EX PRESENTS ACCLAIMED EXPERIMENTAL FILMMAKER
MIKE HOOLBOOM AND HIS LATEST WORK, “FASCINATION”

(Ottawa, 4 May 2007) To conclude its ninth season of Cafe Ex, the Canadian Film Institute is pleased to present Mike Hoolboom’s FASCINATION, his latest work. Presented in collaboration with SAW Video, the Café Ex series features Canada’s most important experimental image-makers in the “intimate and interactive” environment of Club SAW. This particular evening offers the unique opportunity to engage with two of Canada’s most inventive screen artists: Toronto’s Mike Hoolboom and, onscreen, the subject of his latest film, the late video artist pioneer, Colin Campbell. FASCINATION will presented on Thursday, 10 May, at 7:30pm, with Hoolboom in attendance to introduce and discuss his work.

" 'My name? I thought everybody knew. My name is Art Star.' Video artist Colin Campbell died in 2001. Generous, prolific and handsome, he was a pioneer in the budding field of video art who created hilarious personae throughout his thirty-year career: Art Star, Robin, the Woman from Malibu and Colleena. He merged the worlds of performance art with video, creating an ongoing series of tapes that were witty and sly — campy takes on the mirror image of video in the age of media proliferation. He was a colleague, lover and mentor to many of the scene’s artists; and the work of artists such as Lisa Steele, John Greyson, Andrew J. Paterson and Tanya Mars would have been substantially different without his presence in their lives.

It seems appropriate for experimental film-maker Mike Hoolboom to take on the role of chronicler of Campbell’s legacy. A longtime champion of fringe filmmaking, but also an outsider to the video art milieu, Hoolboom brings his unique perspective to bear on his portrait of Colin Campbell. For Hoolboom, Campbell’s death also coincides with the passing of an era, when the image itself is imploding. We are in an era of mourning pictures, when media and death can only represent what is lost. FASCINATION contains interviews and cameos with dozens of Canadian artists whose paths crossed with Campbell’s. Combined with his customary use of appropriated footage and subjective voice-over, Hoolboom presents us with a deeply affecting biography of a fallen star." (Images Festival, Toronto, 2006).

The Café Ex presentation of FASCINATION will take place at Club SAW, 67 Nicholas Street in the lower level of Arts Court, on Thursday May 10th at 7:30pm. Mike Hoolboom will attend the screening to introduce and discuss his work. Admission to this event is pay-as-you-can.

The Canadian Film Institute's public programming of independent Canadian media art works is generously supported by The Canada Council For The Arts.

Artcity Call for Submissions in Visual Art (Calgary)
RUPTURE: to breach harmony, fracture, burst. State of being broken. Tearing of tissue. Fulmination of membrane. Moment between blocked passage and settlement of violent motion. Force exiting confinement. Outgrowing the space of walls. In medical language: acute explosive disruption of the inner portion of an organ by pressure from within or without. Resultant extravasation of its contents exteriorly. There is a sense of movement and growth in the city of Calgary. It is consistently defined by its physical and economic expansion. If there is a momentum building to a point of rupture, here, or elsewhere, what is it? Who are its actors, and what body does it constitute; what body could it alter, or even ruin? Rupture infers aftermath. An event of severance. What constitutes the flood that would rupture the dam, the membrane, the silently straining status quo?

We’re calling artists to submit proposals that engage with Artcity’s 2007 theme: Rupture. We’re seeking works of performance, installation, multi-media, and film/video that are of a highly critical and thought-provoking stature that have the potential to operate within the settings of the previous architectural pavilions. We also have a brand new pavilion for this year’s festival for artists to consider engaging. These pavilions have made Artcity what it is today and continues to evolve into: a vital locus for ideas and dialogue for the city, and with its citizens. The confines of the site-specific works should lend to the enactment of `rupture’. The winning selections will not only derive their content from this notion, but will embody `rupture’ and its implications within the artwork itself.

There are 7 venues to select as the site for artwork. In your submission to Artcity, please specify which site you are applying for. There several options for your submission- please see www.art-city.ca for details. Note: In addition to artist's fees, Artcity will provide assistance to cover material and associated receipted expenses related to each project. There will be up to $1000 CAD available for the Collection of Cubes, The Perpetual Tease Machine, and the MASt pavilions. The remaining pavilions will have $500 CAD available for these expenses.

Love and Automobiles @ The Fabulous Festival of Fringe Film (Hanover, ON)

The Fabulous Festival of Fringe Film has invited a guest curator to present a series of 35mm films at a drive-in theatre in Hanover, Ontario. Love and Automobiles (working title) takes as its inspiration the nostalgia of the drive-in theatre. Of interest to us is the transformation of the automobile as a sort of time machine which projects the viewer into another place without a kinetic utilitarian function. In this static state, the car takes on other meanings. Our selection of films will be guided by the specificities of the drive-in experience. We wish to address films that reference automobiles and car culture, ideas of nostalgia, landscape and notions of romantic love. There is the possibility of showing silent 35mm with live sound and we are also open to archival intermissions films. Exhibition date: August 2, 2007. Guest Curator: Vicky Chainey Gagnon

During the summer of 2004 Tori Foster took her camera across the country to talk to 20 women about what it's like to be queer where they live. The documentary follows the 22 year old's journey through all ten provinces, beginning in Newfoundland and ending in British Columbia.

Each woman has a unique perspective on all things queer - stereotypes, hairstyles, gender mishaps, and community life, to name a few. Now, Toronto 's weekly magazine says, "Moments like tranny-boy Jaye's cogent discussion of macho bullshit in the trans community or manic Winnipegger Madeline's oddly affecting account of leaving Playboys and nudie-girl posters in her bedroom to piss off her bigoted parents resonate on a deep level." The 70 minute documentary is intimate and personal, telling stories about what make each of us who we are.

Shot and edited entirely by Foster, the project is a journey of both self discovery, and an exploration of our queer female communities. Inspired by growing up in the small city of Barrie Ontario, the documentary connects individuals and communities separated by the vast geography of Canada.
