High Definition Camera Clinic

Tue June 26th, 2007
6:00pm - 9:00pm
This evening clinic will serve as an introduction to SAW Video’s newest additions to our video camera arsenal – the Sony HVR-Z1U, and the HVR-V1U.

The Z1U is Sony’s first professional grade video camera in the relatively young HDV High Definition video format. It records a compressed High Definition video image on regular MiniDV tapes at a resolution of 1080i. The HVR-V1U supports 24p (progressive) scan, the frame rate of film and 30p (progressive) scan modes, in addition to typical 60i. Both cameras can also be configured to record in Standard Definition DV.

The workshop will cover basic operation of the cameras, recording in Standard and HDV modes, attaching external microphones and controlling audio levels, and a brief look at some of the special camera modes and alternate frame rates.

Previous experience with MiniDV video cameras or SAW Video’s other production equipment is encouraged, but not necessary to take this clinic.

Love and Automobiles @ The Fabulous Festival of Fringe Film (Hanover, ON)

The Fabulous Festival of Fringe Film has invited a guest curator to present a series of 35mm films at a drive-in theatre in Hanover, Ontario. Love and Automobiles (working title) takes as its inspiration the nostalgia of the drive-in theatre. Of interest to us is the transformation of the automobile as a sort of time machine which projects the viewer into another place without a kinetic utilitarian function. In this static state, the car takes on other meanings. Our selection of films will be guided by the specificities of the drive-in experience. We wish to address films that reference automobiles and car culture, ideas of nostalgia, landscape and notions of romantic love. There is the possibility of showing silent 35mm with live sound and we are also open to archival intermissions films. Exhibition date: August 2, 2007. Guest Curator: Vicky Chainey Gagnon

THE SOUL OF WIT
Director: Ed Folger, Canada 2007, 10 minutes

OFF THE MAP
Director: Campbell Scott, U.S.A. 2003, 108 minutes.

The funny and heartbreaking OFF THE MAP, directed with a poet’s eye and a keen ear for nuance by Campbell Scott, resonates with something rare in today’s movies: simplicity. It respects the New Mexico desert setting where Charley, his wife, Arlene, and their eleven-year-old daughter, Bo, have decided to make their home away from modern conveniences like electricity and running water. And the deft script, which Joan Ackermann adapted from her play, never exploits Charley’s untreated depression, Arlene’s earth-mother tendency to garden in the nude or Bo’s frustration about a life without friends. The entrance of an IRS man into this fragile Garden of Eden allows Scott to observe changes, subtle and seismic, in this maverick family. Joan Allen and Sam Elliott perform brialliantly. Preceded by Ottawa filmmaker Ed Folger’s short drama, THE SOUL OF WIT (Canada 2007, 10 minutes.), based loosely on Shakespeare’s HAMLET.

NOTE: Tickets are $10 ($6 for CFI members) and will be available at the box office on the evening of the event.

RECEPTION TO FOLLOW. SPECIAL GUEST SPEAKER: Ed Folger, Director of THE SOUL OF WIT.
