HOME MOVIE DAY

UPCOMING FESTIVAL DEADLINES

HOME MOVIE DAY

CFC

Home Movie Day

Home Movie Day is a worldwide celebration of amateur films and filmmaking that is held annually on the second Saturday in August. Home Movie Day was started in 2002 by a group of film archivists concerned about what would happen to all the home movies shot on film during the 20th century. They knew many people have boxes full of family memories that they’ve never seen for lack of a projector or out of fear that the films were too fragile to be viewed. They also knew that many people were having their amateur films transferred to videotape or DVD with the mistaken idea that their new digital copies would last forever and the “obsolete” films could be discarded. Original films, and the equipment to view them, can long outlast any version on VHS tape, DVD, or other digital media.

Home Movie Day emphasizes the importance of saving these original films since they are unique cultural documents that encourage the understanding of home movies as valuable records of the everyday experience. Though home movies are generally thought to be the private recordings of family memories, they offer an important glimpse into a side of life that is not often witnessed or captured in mass media. As personal documents, home movies can evoke intensely emotional experiences of seeing and hearing yourself, friends, and relatives from the distant past. Home movies also show how people actually lived at a particular moment in time, providing an insightful social record of a way of life in an unrehearsed and intimate manner. Home movies can also offer the only surviving images of a town, neighbourhood, individual or event, making them important historical documents.

Home Movie Day Ottawa
Home Movie Day Ottawa is a free-of-charge family event hosted by Available Light Screening Collective. The event is an education and outreach opportunity that provides people with a chance to learn about the importance of home movies, meet local film archivists and conservators, and learn about film preservation. Home Movie Day Ottawa allows participants a unique occasion to reflect on their families, communities, neighbourhoods and personal experiences. Most importantly, it is a chance to watch and celebrate these wonderful home movies.

2008 Mois Multi Festival (Quebec)
The Mois Multi is an annual festival, held each February in the Salle Multi and the Studio d’Essai at Méduse (and other venues) in Quebec City. It works to promote local, national and international works, and seeks to increase the visibility and the dissemination of avant-garde media and interdisciplinary arts. Presenting as it does with equal standing, the installations, performances and presentations that are all characterized by the originality and innovation of their artistic proposals, the Mois Multi is the only event of its kind in Canada. It is one of the rare events to present the media arts that are currently being reinvented by the creative force of the country’s artists. The nature of the works presented during this event do not conform to a specific format or genre, but are instead selected based on the strength of their message, no matter what the form. The protean nature of the selected works is certainly one of the characteristics of the Mois Multi. Recto-Verso is interested in art that can propose new angles, new approaches, and new connections with its audience. Each edition of the Mois Multi festival offers an impressive and unique program, bringing together a host of works of international standing from the fields of interdisciplinary and electronic arts.

OPEN FORUM: A Queer Film and Video Event in Ottawa?
Presented by Inside Out Toronto Lesbian and Gay Film and Video Festival

SUNDAY, JULY 22 / 2-4PM
Club SAW, 67 Nicholas Street, Ottawa

Inside Out, the world's third largest queer film and video festival, is looking to bring some of the highlights and prize winners from this year's Toronto festival to the national capital this fall. In its 17 years of operation, the festival has nurtured relationships with many influential directors, distributors and industry professionals. The festival now attracts 32 000 people with works from more than 30 countries!

The queer community in Ottawa-Gatineau is invited to participate in an Open Forum on the subject of the viability of such an initiative. If a mini festival is successful, could this become an annual event that grows in scope? Is there support in the community for a queer film and video event? Would there be business leaders in the community who would financially support the event as patrons and donors?

Many cultural institutions have expressed their interest in partnering on this initiative, including the Canadian Film Institute, Galerie SAW Gallery, SAW Video, Available Light Screening Collective and others. What are the queer groups or organizations in the city that could come on board as community partners?

Jason St-Laurent, Inside Out's Director of Programming, will make a brief presentation which will be followed by an open forum. Refreshments will be served.

Please circulate this announcement as widely as possible. RSVPs appreciated, but not necessary, at jason@insideout.ca

Special thanks to Galerie SAW Gallery and SAW Video for the generous donation of their equipment and space.
