Submission deadline is August 1st, 2007

Production Description:
Saviour Complex is a short, experimental, 16mm film that explores the unspoken politics and shifting power dynamics between a teenage, street level sex trade worker and her clients. Visceral and disturbing, Saviour Complex drags the audience into a cinematic nightmare by offering an answer to the question "what's a nice girl like you doing in a place like this?"
Saviour Complex will use a highly stylized visual approach, no dialogue, poetic voice-over, rhythmic montage and an experimental sound-scape to examine the often thin line between exploiters and exploited.
All actors must be able to portray a great deal of physicality in their roles without the use of dialogue and must be comfortable participating in a film with adult themes. Alice and her 3 clients must be comfortable participating in scenes with implied sexual contact. No actual nudity is required

Characters:
Name: Alice
Gender: Female
Age: Actor must be able to play between 16 and 21(actual age of actor unimportant)
Description: Open to all backgrounds and body types. Alice is a tough and beautiful street level sex trade worker who exists in a surrealist and nightmarish universe. She is the heroin of our story. She is the embodiment of rage and the personification of righteousness. She smashes a hole in the hooker with a heart of gold archetype, by being the complete opposite. She is here to make us all aware of our false sense of entitlement as we gain a glimpse into her self-determined redemption and explosive personal exorcism.

Names: Client #1, Client #2, Client #3
Genders: Male
Ages: 30-50
Description: Open to all backgrounds and body types. The 3 client characters in Saviour Complex are mutated businessmen epitomes, often visually represented in fragments. We see at times only part of them, their hand, their leg, their crotch, their wallet. You can smell the false sense of entitlement off these men from a mile away. They are "Saviour Tricks". The kind of clients who want to be a working girls hero; who want to deliver her from what they view as her hellish life. The kind of clients who have watched Pretty Woman one too many times. The kind of men who look down on Alice while simultaneously craving her degradation through their own.

Names: Double Dutch girl #1, Double Dutch Girl #2, Double Dutch Girl #3
Ages: 7-11
Genders: Female
Description: Open to all backgrounds and body types. All 3 Double Dutch Girls be able to perform double Dutch and other jump rope games as well as hand clapping games. Please note that no child actors will be on set during any scenes with adult themes.

HOME MOVIE DAY

CFC

Home Movie Day

Home Movie Day is a worldwide celebration of amateur films and filmmaking that is held annually on the second Saturday in August. Home Movie Day was started in 2002 by a group of film archivists concerned about what would happen to all the home movies shot on film during the 20th century. They knew many people have boxes full of family memories that they’ve never seen for lack of a projector or out of fear that the films were too fragile to be viewed. They also knew that many people were having their amateur films transferred to videotape or DVD with the mistaken idea that their new digital copies would last forever and the “obsolete” films could be discarded. Original films, and the equipment to view them, can long outlast any version on VHS tape, DVD, or other digital media.

Home Movie Day emphasizes the importance of saving these original films since they are unique cultural documents that encourage the understanding of home movies as valuable records of the everyday experience. Though home movies are generally thought to be the private recordings of family memories, they offer an important glimpse into a side of life that is not often witnessed or captured in mass media. As personal documents, home movies can evoke intensely emotional experiences of seeing and hearing yourself, friends, and relatives from the distant past. Home movies also show how people actually lived at a particular moment in time, providing an insightful social record of a way of life in an unrehearsed and intimate manner. Home movies can also offer the only surviving images of a town, neighbourhood, individual or event, making them important historical documents.

Home Movie Day Ottawa
Home Movie Day Ottawa is a free-of-charge family event hosted by Available Light Screening Collective. The event is an education and outreach opportunity that provides people with a chance to learn about the importance of home movies, meet local film archivists and conservators, and learn about film preservation. Home Movie Day Ottawa allows participants a unique occasion to reflect on their families, communities, neighbourhoods and personal experiences. Most importantly, it is a chance to watch and celebrate these wonderful home movies.

The Wooden Camera

South Africa · 2003 · 90 minutes · English

Director: Ntshavheni Wa Luruli / Principal Cast: Andre Jacobs, Bo Peterson, Dana de Agrella

Kayelitsha, a township close to Capetown, after the end of Apartheid. Two thirteen-year-old kids- Madiba and Sipho - play along the railway line. A train passes by. A dead man is tossed from the train and rolls to their feet. His lifeless hand clutches an attache case. Inside, the boys find a gun and a video camera. Sipho takes the gun and Madiba the camera. Their destinies are sealed.

Madiba makes a wooden box and hides the camera inside, in order to avoid questions and losing his new toy. He starts filming the township and its inhabitants. Through the lens, his everday surroundings take on a strange new beauty.

His status enhanced by gun ownership, Sipho becomes a gang leader and operates out of Capetown. Madiba comes along, but instead of crime, he is more interested in capturing the luxurious life of the city that is in such stark contrast to his township life.

In a bookstore, Madiba films a young white girl stealing a book. They look at each other. Going out of the store, she gives him the book with her name written inside it: Estelle.

Estelle's father is a famous doctor. She lives in a traditional Capetownian white community in which century-old prejudices have not died with the end of apartheid. Estelle is eager to embrace the new South Africa, but her family doesn't allow her to do so.

She rebels and is encouraged by the non-racist views of Mr. Shawn, her music teacher who has taught music in the townships since before independence. Estelle often thinks of Madiba, the boy with his strange camera.

Sipho is now addicted to glue. He continues to traffic and becomes the undisputed chief of his small gang.

Madiba films incessantly. He also dreams of the young white girl who has held out her hand to him. They meet again some days later, and slowly a strong friendship starts between them.

From the first steps of a young cinematographer who changes the perception of his township to the tragic end of Sipho, the good-hearted bad boy, The Wooden Camera tells the story of a friendship between two kids, not understood by their parents, who refuse what seems to them like a compromise with the enemy. It will take all the determination of the kids and the intelligence of Mr. Shawn, who knows that music has no colour, to give a chance to the impossible.
