SAW VIDEO NEWS:

DIRECTOR'S NOTES
goback

Summer is winding down and it's been a busy one. Over the summer, SAW Video launched Far Out Locations, a new mobile video workshop initiative. As a pilot for what we hope will become a permanent project at our centre, we did three workshops with community groups - two in Ottawa and one in Lanark county. The resulting videos are now being streamed on our website at http://www.sawvideo.com/projects/far/index.php. Check them out!

With the fall is coming some staff changes. Ashleigh returns from maternity leave October 1st, and will join Doug to form a dynamic duo of Technical Coordinators. Paul will depart upon Ashleigh's return, though he'll remain with us as part-time club coordinator.

In terms of things coming up early in September, as you can see we've extended the deadlines for both Jumpstart and Feature Video Fund. So get those applications in.! Plus, this Friday is the deadline for our new Feedback series.

We're still soliciting info from our membership on productions produced in 2007. This is critical info for us as we prepare to submit a 3 year operating grant to our major funder, the Canada Council for the Arts. Many of you have responded (thanks for this), but for those who haven't, please please fill out the online form http://www.sawvideo.com/onesheet/ before Sept. 15, 2007.

Finally, I ask you all to mark an important date in your calendars. On Saturday, September 29th, we'll be hosting our 2nd annual Video Arcade fundraiser. For those who attended last year, it was a cool and fun night of playing every video game you could imagine. This year's event is shaping up to be even bigger and better - in addition to fantastic games, our silent auction is shaping up very nicely. More info will be coming your way soon.

Bye for now

CAMERAS/COMPUTERS NEEDED!

Dear SAW Members: Can You Help?

Last month Douglas and I did video training with Innu youth in Sheshatshui and Natuashish, Labrador. Failed by their school system, and plagued by substance abuse and one of the highest suicide rates in the world, Innu youth see little hope in their future.

The response to the training was overwhelmingly positive and we plan to go again in September. But what is desperately needed in both communities is production equipment that can stay behind for the youth to use. We are looking for donations of any good used equipment: audio gear, DV cameras, lighting equipment and computers for editing.If you can help in any way please let us know. Call Franziska at (613) 259-2847 or email pinegrove@superaje.com.

SUPERFAN
February/March 2008
Call for proposals
Deadline September 21st, 2007

Goals; runs; touchdowns; strokes; points; rank; wins; losses; world records; time trials; points against; plus/minus; fumbles; strikeouts; shut outs; power play goal percentage; total personal fouls; fourth down conversions; intentional walks.

This short list shines only a small light on the statistical landscape of sport. The generation of this detailed documentation of competitive sports produces a vast and massive movement of numerical information back and forth through newspapers, magazine, websites, speciality channels and newscasts. Like an athletic stock market, talent is commodified, codified and reduced to columns of percentage points. With this call for new electronic artworks Artengine hopes to bring a poetic perspective to this statistical landscape.

In Winter of 2008 Artengine will present Superfan, to be exhibited in public locations in Ottawa's Elgin Street area, a popular night-life
district with many sports bars. The theme of the commissioned work is to be centered around the statistical information generated from professional and amateur sport.

Proposals from all disciplines will be considered however, some preference will be given to art works with greater engagements with the
technological aspects of their production and presentation.

Artists are encouraged to keep in mind that the commissioned works may be presented in the context of a sports bar or similar public location, and so fragile or expensive interactive projects may be difficult to secure.

Commissioned Artists will receive:

1.$1000.00 commissioning fee for the creation and presentation of the work.
2.$200.00 towards production materials.
3.Producing membership for one year. This membership gives access to
Artengine facilities and equipment. (For those artists from outside the
Outouais region a On-line Membership will be awarded.) Please check
www.artengine.ca/html/newmember-e.php for more information on Artengine
memberships.

Proposals should include:

1. Project Proposal (2 pages max.)
2. Artist Statement (1 page max.)
3. Current CV (3 pages max.)
4. Supporting Materials (digital images; websites; video documentation
etc. Please do not send 35 mm Slides.)
5. Self-adressed envelop with sufficient postage.

1.un cachet de 1 000 $ pour la création et la présentation de la commande ;
2.une contribution de 200 $ à l’achat de matériaux de production ;

1. une proposition de projet (2 pages max.) ;
2. un énoncé artistique (1 page max.) ;
3. un curriculum vitæ à jour (3 pages max.) ;
4. des documents à l’appui (images numériques, sites Web, documents
vidéo, etc. – s’il vous plaît, n’envoyez pas de diapositives 35 mm) ;
5. une enveloppe pré affranchie.

NSI STORYTELLER TRAINING PROGRAM

Revamped NSI Storytellers training program seeks Aboriginal writers to develop new show for APTN

Winnipeg - Responding to market needs, the National Screen Institute - Canada (NSI) in association with Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN) has redesigned NSI Storytellers to develop above-the-line Aboriginal broadcast talent. Aboriginal writers eager to learn the craft of writing television drama are encouraged to apply at www.nsi-canada.ca. Working individually and as a group the selected candidates will write scripts for a half hour daytime serial that may go into production for broadcast on APTN.

Deadline for applications is Monday October 15, 2007, 4:30 p.m. Central Time.

Up to five writers will be chosen based on submitted writing samples, an ability to work as a group, a strong desire to work in the Canadian television industry, and a willingness to commit to the program. Training for writers commences in fall 2007 and will span seven months. The second phase will provide training for directors and producers in spring 2008. A separate call for applications for this phase will be issued in the new year.

Writing participants will learn the basics of narrative writing and develop storylines and series arcs for the project. As with all NSI programs, training will be intensive and delivered by industry experts.

"The National Screen Institute prides itself on providing market-driven training. Our decision to restructure NSI Storytellers was based on the need for more television content from Canadian Aboriginal writers, directors and producers," says Susan Millican, NSI CEO. "APTN is a natural fit to help hone this craft and possibly showcase the results."

"NSI has a stellar reputation for delivering well-trained above-the-line graduates from its programs," said Jean LaRose, APTN Chief Executive Officer. "To have the NSI Storytellers curriculum based on an APTN program concept, with a real chance of going into production for broadcast, helps to fulfill our mandate of presenting programming by, for and about Aboriginal Peoples."

The program is managed by Brandice Vivier-Burns.

NSI Storytellers is made possible through the generous funding of the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network, NBC Universal and CHUM.

The National Screen Institute - Canada, with headquarters in Winnipeg, is Canada's oldest nationally-recognized film and television training school. The National Screen Institute helps emerging writers, directors and producers bring their stories to life to share at home and abroad. Its market-driven programs have led to employment for National Screen Institute graduates by giving them a competitive edge - according to the latest National Screen Institute Alumni Survey, 97% of respondents are working in the industry.

About APTN:

September 1, 2007 marks the eight-year anniversary of the launch of the first national Aboriginal television network in the world with programming by, for and about Aboriginal Peoples to share with all Canadians and viewers around the world. APTN is available in over 10 million Canadian households and commercial establishments with cable, direct-to-home satellite (DTH), telco-delivered and fixed wireless television service providers. APTN does not receive government funding for operations but generates revenue through subscriber fees, advertising sales and strategic partnerships. APTN broadcasts programming with 56% offered in English, 16% in French and 28% in Aboriginal languages. For more information, please contact APTN at (204) 947-9331 or toll-free at 1-888-278-8862, or visit the website at www.aptn.ca .
