	PUBLIC DOMAIN COMMISSIONING PROJECT
PUBLIC DOMAIN VIDEO COMMISSIONING PROJECT (French version follows English) DEADLINE : October 30, 2007 PUBLIC DOMAIN is a commissioning project offered by SAW Video in collaboration with Library and Archives Canada. SAW Video invites Canadian video artists to submit a research and creation project that utilizes public domain* material found in the audio-visual collection of Library and Archives Canada (LAC). * Public domain is a statute referring to intellectual properties (works, inventions…) for which, due to the expiration of their copyright, it is no longer necessary to obtain authorization for use. Library and Archives Canada houses thousands of audio-visual documents and some are now in the public domain*. These records cover a myriad of historic events that directly mark our collective history, such as documentation of the First and Second World Wars and of industrial development. As well as documenting historic events, the extensive collection of moving images at LAC also includes amateur footage of private events such as garden parties, various sporting activities, scenes of camaraderie between soldiers, friends, and workers. These audio-visual records leave traces of the intimate stories of individuals and each offers a different perspective on the passage of time. Artists are invited to write their own history through the creation of a contemporary work that incorporates historic traces such as these. To stimulate the imagination and to give an idea of the variety of work housed within Library and Archives Canada, we have selected a sample of works from the public domain. These samples can be found at here. The work you propose to create need not be limited by images such as those we have selected as examples. In preparing your research and creation proposal you are also free to integrate other video material (found or original) in addition to the material culled from Library and Archives Canada. The project will develop in 3 phases starting in Spring 2008 (dates will be confirmed according to the availability of the artists). PHASE 1 : Research and pre-selection of public domain clips. Library and Archives Canada offers an on-line databank of its audio-visual collection. Those artists whose proposals are selected will receive a user guide outlining different electronic research mechanisms in order to facilitate their research into archival moving image records in the public domain. This initial phase can be undertaken at the artist's place of residence. PHASE 2 : Consultation and selection of public domain clips from the Archives. This phase will take place at the consultation centre of Library and Archives Canada in Ottawa where the artists will preview their chosen works. PHASE 3: Transfer of the selected images and production of a new original work. Production will take place at SAW Video for regional artists or at an appropriate location for artists outside the Ottawa-Gatineau region. Selected artists will receive : · An artist's fee of $ 2500; · Up to $ 2,500 in production and post-production equipment waivers (please refer to our price list at www.sawvideo.com). Artists from outside the Ottawa-Gatineau region will receive a equipment budget up to the same value. · A one-year producing membership at SAW Video · A credit of $250 towards any workshops offered at SAW Video. In addition, SAW Video will cover : · The cost of travel, accommodation and per diem for artists during their research residency in Ottawa (up to one week) · The cost of transferring to video selected works from the Archives Eligibility criteria : · Artists must be mid-career or established in their practice; · Artists must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada; · Eligible projects are those over which the artists maintains full creative and editorial control; · All genres are accepted (experimental, dramatic, documentary, new media); · Final productions should take the form of single-channel works not exceeding 20 minutes in duration. APPLICATION PROCEDURES : Applicants must submit : · A project description (2 pages maximum) including a description of the research direction you are planning to undertake at the Archives (the types of material you hope to find, the themes and genres that you wish to research and explore) and your proposed treatment of the found images; · A brief description of the importance of Library and Archives Canada to your research; · A current resumé (with an accent on your artistic work); · A description of your technical needs; · Examples of your past work (video or film) on DVD, VHS, or Mini DV formats (please limit your selection to 3 examples); · A provisional budget outlining expenses required for the production (including rental of equipment based on SAW Video equipment rental rates). NB : Email submissions will not be considered and please do not submit material that cannot be replaced. Proposals will be evaluated by an independent jury composed of artistic peers. SAW Video Cultural Equity Production Fund

The Cultural Equity fund is a production support program aimed at providing opportunities for visible minority artists to express themselves creatively through the medium of video. Applicants to the fund must be new to filmmaking or have less than 3 videos to their credit. Up to 3 awards will be given. Proposals are assessed by an independent jury and the successful applicants have one year to complete their project.

Eligible projects are those over which the artist has creative and editorial control. All genres are accepted (i.e. experimental, drama, documentary, video installation, and new media.). Artists crossing over from other disciplines (i.e. theatre, writing, visual arts, and dance) are also welcome. Please note: Feature-length projects are not eligible to apply. In addition, editing of successful projects must take place at SAW Video, and this should be factored into the budget accordingly.

A screening of productions will be held in Club SAW. Applicants retain copyright to their productions, but they must provide a copy of their tape to be kept in SAW Video’s archives.

The successful applicants receive: A one year producing membership;
up to $1200 in access to SAW Video equipment;
a $250 credit towards any workshop(s) offered by SAW Video; up to $200 in cash;
a copy of the SAW Video Production Handbook

Our new Mac Pro Tower system has arrived and with it the Final Cut Pro 5 production suite. This 2 day course will cover all steps of the process from setting up a project and capturing from a dv device, to using the timeline based interface, and outputting back to dv. Day 1 of the workshop will focus on a complete overveiw of the FCP software demonstrated by the instructor. Day 2 of the workshop will be hands on for all participants to practice editing a brief sequence under the supervision of the instructor.

This workshop includes 3 hours of practice time which may be booked with the Technical Coordinator according to availability. Workshop is limited to 4 participants On day 2 participants will be seated in pairs at each editing workstation. Deadline for registration is Monday October 15th, 2007

Ryan Stec is an artist and curator who's work deals with the idea of plurality in audiences experience of media. He started the Remix project(artengine.ca/remix) in 2002 with co-curator Anne Clarke, and it has become a popular local commissioning program producing over 30 new works from local video artists. He has also recently completed a residency at Platform Gallery (www.platform.fi) in Vaasa, Finland where he curated a program of nordic media art which was presented as a performance where the work was remixed in a live context.

This two-day workshop teaches the basics of camera, audio and lighting through hands on training.

On the first day of the workshop, participants will receive basic instruction on SAW Video's prime 3-chip HDV and Mini DV cameras -- such as the, Sony Z1U and V1U and the Panasonic AG-DVX100B. Participants will be introduced to three point lighting and dealing with power on location. A variety of mics will be used and their applications will be discussed.

Day two of the workshop provides the added opportunity for more hands on time and instruction. Shooting exercises will be indoors and outdoors (weather permitting) simulating varying conditions and situations.

Cross-Media Challenge

The National Film Board of Canada (NFB) and the Sheffield International Documentary Festival in the United Kingdom are pleased to issue a call for proposals for a new cross-media competition called the Cross-Media Challenge. The Cross-Media Challenge is a co-production competition for innovative, interactive, socially engaged content with applications for mobile and broadband. It will award one producer a $10,500CAD/£5,000 co-production development deal with the NFB. Three semi-finalists will be invited to present their
projects at a panel session during the Sheffield Doc/Fest on November 10. The winner will be announced at the DigiDocs 360 program at the Sheffield Doc/Fest. The Sheffield InternationalDocumentary Festival takes place November 7 - 11,
2007, in Sheffield, England.

contemporary cutting-edge digital platforms. Enriching the lives of Canadian and international audiences, Canadian producers create
dynamic, entertaining, award-winning film, television, and digital content for millions of viewers around the globe fueled by the fire
of their talent, creativity, and commitment to excellence.

The CFTPA Indie Awards are specifically intended to celebrate independent producers of high-quality programming. An independent
producer is considered to be the person(s) who created and/or developed the project being submitted for consideration; structured
its financing; worked hand in hand with its writers and story editors; hired and managed the creative talent and crews to help turn
the story into the program; oversaw the post production process; controlled the exploitation of the rights; delivered the finished
product; and, oversaw the publicity and marketing efforts for the program domestically and internationally.

Winnipeg - Responding to market needs, the National Screen Institute - Canada (NSI) in association with Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN) has redesigned NSI Storytellers to develop above-the-line Aboriginal broadcast talent. Aboriginal writers eager to learn the craft of writing television drama are encouraged to apply at www.nsi-canada.ca. Working individually and as a group the selected candidates will write scripts for a half hour daytime serial that may go into production for broadcast on APTN.

Deadline for applications is Monday October 15, 2007, 4:30 p.m. Central Time.

Up to five writers will be chosen based on submitted writing samples, an ability to work as a group, a strong desire to work in the Canadian television industry, and a willingness to commit to the program. Training for writers commences in fall 2007 and will span seven months. The second phase will provide training for directors and producers in spring 2008. A separate call for applications for this phase will be issued in the new year.

Writing participants will learn the basics of narrative writing and develop storylines and series arcs for the project. As with all NSI programs, training will be intensive and delivered by industry experts.

Event Coordinator

The Alternator Gallery for Contemporary Art, an artist-run visual and media arts centre in Kelowna, B.C., is currently seeking a full-time
conference coordinator to assist with organizing the national conference and festival of the Independent Media Arts Alliance in
June 2008. The conference is jointly hosted by the Alternator and the Ullus Collective, an indigenous media arts organization based in
Penticton, BC. The Independent Media Arts Alliance is a national network of independent film, video and electronic media producers,
distributors and exhibitors that works to promote funding, production, distribution and exhibition opportunities. IMAA includes
84 organizations representing more than 12,000 artists and cultural workers. The theme of the conference is diversity with a strong
emphasis on indigenous practices.

In order to considered for employment under this Human Resource Development Canada funded program, applicants must meet qualification criteria including, but not limited to:

- Applicant must be currently unemployed
- Applicant has had an active EI claim with the past 36 months or the applicant has established a claim for maternity or parental benefits within the past 60 months.

FOR DISABILITY:
This position is designed to assist persons with a disability or permanent injury that is causing a barrier to entering the workforce.
Candidates must be unemployed (or working a minimum number of hours) and be ready and able to enter into paid competitive employment.

This position will operate in collaboration with the IMAA national office, the National Indigenous Media Arts Coalition, the University
of British Columbia Okanagan, the festival organizing committee, the Alternator Gallery, the Ullus Collective and volunteers. Duties
include:

- Event planning and coordination, leading up to and including the
event (delegate and presenter arrangements, venue logistics,
translation, hospitality etc.)
- Assembling funding applications, sponsorship proposals and final
reports;
- Overseeing production of invitations, programs and signage;
- Coordinating advertising and promotional activities;
- Database, file and information management;
- Other duties as required.

Assets include:
- Good oral and written communications skills;
- Knowledge of basic office procedures, including organizational skill;
- Attention to detail, flexibility and willingness to learn;
- Familiarity with computer in a Mac environment, including Word,
Entourage, Excel and In-Design;
- Interest in visual / media arts and diverse cultural communities.

Wages: $420/week (30 hours at $14.10/hour)

The position is a one-year term contract from September 24, 2007 to September 24, 2008.

Canadian Film Institute presents Five Short Films Straight from the Heart of Africa

Backgrounder

The Burundi Film Center (BFC) is a media development projected launched by three Canadian filmmakers in the little-known East African nation of Burundi. With no outside funding, their own equipment and some resourceful friends, the Canadians (two from
Ottawa, one from Montreal) were able to train 36 students, aged 18-25, the basics of film production and produce five short dramatic films. Already wooing audiences around East Africa, the films now come to Ottawa for their Canadian premiere on Wednesday, September 19th.

Beyond the films, the event will celebrate of East African life and be an opportunity for Ottawans to engage the cultural
richness of a distant continent. A photo exhibit by BFC artist-in-residence and internationally exhibited Ottawa photographer
Bridget Farr will display another side to Burundian life, accompanied by a silent auction of the photos, with proceeds helping to sustain the BFC. Patrons will also be able to sample staples in African cuisine provided by the Burundian Embassy.

Overview:

Burundi, located just south of Rwanda, is a nation emerging from a war-time crisis and entering a new era of cultural
understanding, tolerance and education. The absence of a developed media has crippled the nation’s ability to operate as a proper
democracy and exposed the need for professional journalism and artistic expression through audio-visual storytelling. The Burundi Film Centre is a unique opportunity for Burundian citizens to learn essential 21st century mass communication skills from Canadian filmmakers and documentarians, while engaging those same media experts in African issues.

A long-term partnership with Canadian media professionals and students are integral to this realization by sharing their
knowledge, passion and expertise with the future generation of Africa’s burgeoning media. Building on the Rwanda Initiative’s successful model, the BFC will further the nation’s capacity to think critically about domestic issues
and empower a new generation to evoke social change through film and video.

BENT with Frederic Arsenault
This workshop is free to all as a part of Festival X, Ottawa's new Photography Festival. Check out www.festivalx.ca for more information on other events.

A free work shop and creative session for experienced nerds and the curious novice alike. Like a circuit bending workshop for the digital photographer BENT will introduce participants to databending through a variety of simple and professional software. Host Frederic Arsenault will also explain how different photo based software packages interpret file information differently. This experimentation at the file level will bring the digital artist into a closer relationship with the files they manipulate.

This workshop is co-presented with the new chapter of Dorkbot based in Ottawa. Dorkbot is a global network of locally based meetings between artists, engineers, and designers working in the medium of electronic art.
