Presented as part of Art Star 3 Video Art Biennal
Curated by Penny McCann

SAW Video is very pleased to present the Ottawa premiere of Toronto media artist Deirdre Logue's series, Why Always Instead of Just Sometimes, a collection of 12 short works that record accomplishments without impact, small feats of moderate strength and moments of mild impudence. The artist will be present at the screening.

Beyond Her Usual Limits: Performance and the Moving Image
AS workshop with Deirdre Logue (Toronto)
Saturday, October 6th, 2-4pm
Club SAW
Free admission

In this workshop, Deirdre Logue will present old works, new works and surprise works to encourage an open discussion on the self as subject. Her film, video, performance and installation work focuses on self-presentational discourse, notions of retrospection, the body as material and corporeal entity, confessional autobiography, the passage of real time and the self-portrait.

Deirdre's recent projects include Enlightened Nonsense, a series of 10 short performance films about repetition, Why Always Instead of Just Sometimes, completed in 2005, and her most recent work, Rough Count, when, during the simple act of counting a bag of confetti - piece by piece - memory thresholds are found and failures amass. Deirdre's work addresses how it is that women organize their images and identities for mass consumption, and how this reflects or distracts from our knowledge of the individual. She is also interested in both queer and feminist theory, early video and performance art, psychoanalysis and psychosomatic illness.

Artist's bio:
Deirdre Logue has spent the past fifteen years working on behalf of media artists by organizing independent film, video and new media festivals, by founding collectives and by participating in forums and symposiums on the future of independent artistic practice. She was the Executive Director of the Images Festival of Independent Film and Video from 1995-99 and Executive Director of the Canadian Filmmakers Distribution Centre from 2001-2006. She is currently Director of Development at Vtape.

As a filmmaker, she has actively exhibited her work since 1990. Deirdre is perhaps best known for her series of short, handmade, performance films entitled Enlightened Nonsense completed in 2000 and her 2005 series, Why Always Instead of Just Sometimes, which has screened at the Canadian Embassy in Berlin as part of the 2007 Berlin International Film Festival, and at the 2006 Images Festival, where it won two awards: Best Installation/ New Media Award and the Images Prize.

PUBLIC DOMAIN COMMISSIONING PROJECT

PUBLIC DOMAIN
VIDEO COMMISSIONING PROJECT

(French version follows English)

DEADLINE : October 30, 2007

PUBLIC DOMAIN is a commissioning project offered by SAW Video in collaboration with Library and Archives Canada. SAW Video invites Canadian video artists to submit a research and creation project that utilizes public domain* material found in the audio-visual collection of Library and Archives Canada (LAC).

* Public domain is a statute referring to intellectual properties (works, inventions…) for which, due to the expiration of their copyright, it is no longer necessary to obtain authorization for use.

Library and Archives Canada houses thousands of audio-visual documents and some are now in the public domain*. These records cover a myriad of historic events that directly mark our collective history, such as documentation of the First and Second World Wars and of industrial development. As well as documenting historic events, the extensive collection of moving images at LAC also includes amateur footage of private events such as garden parties, various sporting activities, scenes of camaraderie between soldiers, friends, and workers. These audio-visual records leave traces of the intimate stories of individuals and each offers a different perspective on the passage of time.

Artists are invited to write their own history through the creation of a contemporary work that incorporates historic traces such as these.

To stimulate the imagination and to give an idea of the variety of work housed within Library and Archives Canada, we have selected a sample of works from the public domain. These samples can be found at here. The work you propose to create need not be limited by images such as those we have selected as examples. In preparing your research and creation proposal you are also free to integrate other video material (found or original) in addition to the material culled from Library and Archives Canada.

The project will develop in 3 phases starting in Spring 2008 (dates will be confirmed according to the availability of the artists).

PHASE 1 : Research and pre-selection of public domain clips. Library and Archives Canada offers an on-line databank of its audio-visual collection. Those artists whose proposals are selected will receive a user guide outlining different electronic research mechanisms in order to facilitate their research into archival moving image records in the public domain. This initial phase can be undertaken at the artist's place of residence.

PHASE 2 : Consultation and selection of public domain clips from the Archives. This phase will take place at the consultation centre of Library and Archives Canada in Ottawa where the artists will preview their chosen works.

PHASE 3: Transfer of the selected images and production of a new original work. Production will take place at SAW Video for regional artists or at an appropriate location for artists outside the Ottawa-Gatineau region.

Selected artists will receive :

· An artist's fee of $ 2500;
· Up to $ 2,500 in production and post-production equipment waivers (please refer to our price list at www.sawvideo.com). Artists from outside the Ottawa-Gatineau region will receive a equipment budget up to the same value.
· A one-year producing membership at SAW Video
· A credit of $250 towards any workshops offered at SAW Video.

In addition, SAW Video will cover :
· The cost of travel, accommodation and per diem for artists during their research residency in Ottawa (up to one week)
· The cost of transferring to video selected works from the Archives

Eligibility criteria :
· Artists must be mid-career or established in their practice;
· Artists must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada;
· Eligible projects are those over which the artists maintains full creative and editorial control;
· All genres are accepted (experimental, dramatic, documentary, new media);
· Final productions should take the form of single-channel works not exceeding 20 minutes in duration.

APPLICATION PROCEDURES :

Applicants must submit :
· A project description (2 pages maximum) including a description of the research direction you are planning to undertake at the Archives (the types of material you hope to find, the themes and genres that you wish to research and explore) and your proposed treatment of the found images;
· A brief description of the importance of Library and Archives Canada to your research;
· A current resumé (with an accent on your artistic work);
· A description of your technical needs;
· Examples of your past work (video or film) on DVD, VHS, or Mini DV formats (please limit your selection to 3 examples);
· A provisional budget outlining expenses required for the production (including rental of equipment based on SAW Video equipment rental rates).
NB : Email submissions will not be considered and please do not submit material that cannot be replaced.
Proposals will be evaluated by an independent jury composed of artistic peers. Up to six artists will be selected and successful applicants will be contacted by mid-November.
SAW Video actively encourages applications from all artists, regardless of race, age, class, gender, sexual orientation, or ability.

Commissioned works will be screened publicly. Artists will retain rights over their productions but must provide a copy of their tapes for inclusion in SAW Video's archives.

APPEL DE DOSSIERS
DOMAINE PUBLIC
PROJET DE COMMANDE D'ŒUVRES VIDÉOGRAPHIQUES*

DATE LIMITE : 30 OCTOBRE 2007

· une adhésion d'un an à titre de producteur à SAW Video;
· un crédit de 250 $ pour tout atelier offert par SAW Video;

WORKSHOP SUBSIDY PROGRAM

SAW Video is launching a new initiative with the goal of increasing accessibility to our workshops and artists’ training to those who would otherwise be unable to afford it. We are offering 4 workshop subsidies to be applied directly towards workshops of their choice. The subsidies will cover 100% of the cost of one workshop per recipient as well as a one-year basic membership to SAW Video. This is a great opportunity for low-income emerging or established artists to receive training and to become more involved in the center.

In order to apply for this subsidy program we will need to receive a one-page letter of intent describing how taking a SAW Video workshop would specifically benefit you as an artist. We encourage applicants to self-identify as low income as these subsidies are available only to those who could not otherwise afford our workshop fees. This program is open both to existing SAW Video members and to the general public.

The deadline for submission is Dec 1st, 2007. Recipients will be able to use their subsidies for workshops scheduled after January 2008. Letters of intent may be dropped off in person at SAW Video during operating hours or may be emailed directly to ariel@sawvideo.com. Successful subsidy recipients will not be made public to the membership, and the results will remain confidential. If you have any further questions regarding the application process please contact SAW Video’s workshop coordinator Ariel Smith at 613-238-7628 or at ariel@sawvideo.com.

Thanks to CJOH-TV Development Fund for their support of this initiative.

Deadline for applications is Monday October 15, 2007, 4:30 p.m. Central Time.

Up to five writers will be chosen based on submitted writing samples, an ability to work as a group, a strong desire to work in the Canadian television industry, and a willingness to commit to the program. Training for writers commences in fall 2007 and will span seven months. The second phase will provide training for directors and producers in spring 2008. A separate call for applications for this phase will be issued in the new year.

Writing participants will learn the basics of narrative writing and develop storylines and series arcs for the project. As with all NSI programs, training will be intensive and delivered by industry experts.

"The National Screen Institute prides itself on providing market-driven training. Our decision to restructure NSI Storytellers was based on the need for more television content from Canadian Aboriginal writers, directors and producers," says Susan Millican, NSI CEO. "APTN is a natural fit to help hone this craft and possibly showcase the results."

"NSI has a stellar reputation for delivering well-trained above-the-line graduates from its programs," said Jean LaRose, APTN Chief Executive Officer. "To have the NSI Storytellers curriculum based on an APTN program concept, with a real chance of going into production for broadcast, helps to fulfill our mandate of presenting programming by, for and about Aboriginal Peoples."

The program is managed by Brandice Vivier-Burns.

NSI Storytellers is made possible through the generous funding of the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network, NBC Universal and CHUM.

The National Screen Institute - Canada, with headquarters in Winnipeg, is Canada's oldest nationally-recognized film and television training school. The National Screen Institute helps emerging writers, directors and producers bring their stories to life to share at home and abroad. Its market-driven programs have led to employment for National Screen Institute graduates by giving them a competitive edge - according to the latest National Screen Institute Alumni Survey, 97% of respondents are working in the industry.

About APTN:

September 1, 2007 marks the eight-year anniversary of the launch of the first national Aboriginal television network in the world with programming by, for and about Aboriginal Peoples to share with all Canadians and viewers around the world. APTN is available in over 10 million Canadian households and commercial establishments with cable, direct-to-home satellite (DTH), telco-delivered and fixed wireless television service providers. APTN does not receive government funding for operations but generates revenue through subscriber fees, advertising sales and strategic partnerships. Location: 953 Gladstone

an overview of recent activities of the Ottawa-Gatineau chapter;
preliminary results of a member survey;

We will hold elections for the positions of Co-chair and Secretary. Nominations are welcomed before or during the AGM. Incumbents Sheila Petzold (Co-Chair) and Ed Kucerak (Sec’y) are standing again.

Special Documentary Screening

Immediately following the AGM we will screen a rarely seen treasure, on a local subject!.....discovered in the archives of the Canadian Filmmakers Distribution Centre.

The film Bank Street by director Harriet Pacaud will be presented by DOC member Rick Hancox who describes the documentary film as “a buried treasure…..incredible cinema verité”. It was made by Pacaud in 1978 when she was a student at Algonquin College. A discussion will follow the screening.

Bank Street
Director: Harriet Pacaud (Can. 1978) B&W, 16mm, 23 min.
There are a few blocks in the heart of Canada's national capital that the guided tours tend to bypass. It's pinball and beer parlors draw the old, the lonely, and the frustrated. "Bank Street" is like lifting up a rock - what you see underneath may not always be pleasant, but perhaps it should be seen.

Rick Hancox - Bio
Rick Hancox is known for his award-winning experimental and personal documentary films, several of which are in the National Gallery of Canada. He grew up in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan and Charlottetown, PEI, and studied film and photography at NYU and Ohio University. He taught at Sheridan College for 12 years, and then joined the Communication Studies Department of
