(French version follows English) DEADLINE : October 30, 2007 PUBLIC DOMAIN is a commissioning project offered by SAW Video in collaboration with Library and Archives Canada. SAW Video invites Canadian video artists to submit a research and creation project that utilizes public domain* material found in the audio-visual collection of Library and Archives Canada (LAC). * Public domain is a statute referring to intellectual properties (works, inventions…) for which, due to the expiration of their copyright, it is no longer necessary to obtain authorization for use. Library and Archives Canada houses thousands of audio-visual documents and some are now in the public domain*. These records cover a myriad of historic events that directly mark our collective history, such as documentation of the First and Second World Wars and of industrial development. As well as documenting historic events, the extensive collection of moving images at LAC also includes amateur footage of private events such as garden parties, various sporting activities, scenes of camaraderie between soldiers, friends, and workers. These audio-visual records leave traces of the intimate stories of individuals and each offers a different perspective on the passage of time. Artists are invited to write their own history through the creation of a contemporary work that incorporates historic traces such as these. To stimulate the imagination and to give an idea of the variety of work housed within Library and Archives Canada, we have selected a sample of works from the public domain. These samples can be found at here. The work you propose to create need not be limited by images such as those we have selected as examples. In preparing your research and creation proposal you are also free to integrate other video material (found or original) in addition to the material culled from Library and Archives Canada. The project will develop in 3 phases starting in Spring 2008 (dates will be confirmed according to the availability of the artists). PHASE 1 : Research and pre-selection of public domain clips. Library and Archives Canada offers an on-line databank of its audio-visual collection. Those artists whose proposals are selected will receive a user guide outlining different electronic research mechanisms in order to facilitate their research into archival moving image records in the public domain. This initial phase can be undertaken at the artist's place of residence. PHASE 2 : Consultation and selection of public domain clips from the Archives. This phase will take place at the consultation centre of Library and Archives Canada in Ottawa where the artists will preview their chosen works. PHASE 3: Transfer of the selected images and production of a new original work. Production will take place at SAW Video for regional artists or at an appropriate location for artists outside the Ottawa-Gatineau region. Selected artists will receive : ·

SAW Video is launching a new initiative with the goal of increasing accessibility to our workshops and artists' training to those who would otherwise be unable to afford it. We are offering 4 workshop subsidies to be applied directly towards workshops of their choice. The subsidies will cover 100% of the cost of one workshop per recipient as well as a one-year basic membership to SAW Video. This is a great opportunity for low-income emerging or established artists to receive training and to become more involved in the centre. In order to apply for this subsidy program we will need to receive a one-page letter of intent describing how taking a SAW Video workshop would specifically benefit you as an artist. We encourage applicants to self-identify as low income as these subsidies are available only to those who could not otherwise afford our workshop fees. This program is open both to existing SAW Video members and to the general public. For information on the workshops we offer, go to http://www.sawvideo.com/sawvideo/workshopsx.php The
deadline for submission is Dec 1st, 2007. Thanks to CJOH/CTV Development Fund for their support of this initiative.

| Available Light Screening Collective presents: BURIED TREASURES OF THE CFMDC Three evenings of rarely seen 16mm classics from the Canadian Filmmakers Distribution Centre (CFMDC) Curated and with an introduction by Rick Hancox This series presents together for the first time some of the best short 16mm films deposited with the Canadian Filmmakers Distribution Center (CFMDC) during its early years. The CFMDC is Canada’s foremost non-commercial distributor and resource for independently produced film. Based in Toronto, the Centre was founded in 1967 by a group of visionary filmmakers with the goal of increasing distribution opportunities, audiences, and visibility for artists and independent film. Some of the filmmakers in "Buried Treasures"
are well known, others less so. But what these narrative, documentary,
and experimental films have in common is their bold creativity
and independent spirit. Some works have gained more exposure than
others, but most have never received the recognition they deserve.
All of them (with the exception of Harriet Pacaud’s Bank
Street, showing in Program Three) are still available from the
CFMDC, yet have remained overlooked or else largely been forgotten.
Diminishing 16mm film projection has only added to their relative
obscurity – and value. Program One: Mosaic, Jack Chambers, 9 min., 1965 – Intermission – Rhapsody on a Theme from a House Movie,

| CFI PRESENTS A COMPLETE RETROSPECTIVE OF THE FILMS OF ALANIS OBOMSAWIN (Ottawa, 28 September 2007) The showcase series of the Canadian Film< Institute’s Fall 2007 programming is a special month-long retrospective< of the films of acclaimed aboriginal documentary filmmaker, Alanis Obomsawin. Entitled “Cinema of Sovereignty: The Films of Alanis Obomsawin,” the retrospective is presented in assocation with the National Film Board of Canada. “Filmmaker, writer, singer, activist, Alanis Obomsawin is an utterly remarkable artist,” says CFI Director Tom McSorley. “This retrospective reveals not only the power and commitment of Obomsawin’s cinema as an agent of social education and preserver of memory, but also the critical discourses and fundamental questions her work raises about Canada itself as a nation state. From her early socio-historical works to her cycle of films about the Oka Crisis of 1990 to her recent investigations of her own family and tribal history, Alanis Obomsawin has been and continues to be — she turned 75 in August — one of the most engaged, vital, and committed filmmakers in this place called Canada. It is no exaggeration to say that she is the greatest aboriginal filmmaker in the history of cinema. We are proud to present all of her impressive work, work which spans almost four decades.” CINEMA OF SOVEREIGNTY: THE FILMS OF ALANIS OBOMSAWIN begins on Saturday, October 6, at 7:00pm with Obomsawin’s first three films: CHRISTMAS AT MOOSE FACTORY (1971), MOTHER OF MANY CHILDREN (1977), and AMISK (1977). All films are presented in the Auditorium at the Library and Archives Canada, 395 rue Wellington Street. The complete schedule is listed below. Admission: $6.00 for CFI members/students/seniors, and $9.00 for the general public. For more information, please consult the Canadian Film Institute website: www.cfi-icf.ca.
This programme features Obomsawin’s early efforts at documenting the lives and cultures of aboriginal peoples: CHRISTMAS AT MOOSE FACTORY (1971, 13 min.) a groundbreaking portrait of aboriginal youth preparing for Christian and Cree feast days, and “...at the age of thirty-nine she became the first Native woman to make a film for the NFB” (Randolph Lewis); MOTHER OF MANY CHILDREN (1977, 58 min.), a portrait a various North American aboriginal women’s extraordinary achievements; AMISK (1977, 40 min.), a poetic film about a benefit concert to raise money for the Northern Cree to fight the massive James Bay hydro project about to be imposed on the vast landscapes they have inhabited for millennia. Sat./sam. Oct. 13 oct., 13:00 WABAN-AKI: PEOPLE FROM WHERE THE SUN RISES Canada 2006, 104 minutes Obomsawin’s illustrious career comes full circle with WABAN-AKI. Having dedicated nearly four decades to chronicling the lives of Canada’s First Nations, she returns to the village where she was raised to craft a lyric account of her own people, who live in in the Abenaki community of Odanak. Presented in association with the One World Film Festival (World InterAction Mondiale). Sat./sam. Oct. 13 oct., 19:00 ALANIS OBOMSAWIN: EARLY WORKS I: 1984-1987 INCIDENT AT RESTIGOUCHE (1984, 46 min.) On June 11 and 20, 1981, the Québec Provincial Police (QPP) raided Restigouche Reserve, Québec. At issue were the salmon-fishing rights of the Mi’gmaq people. Because salmon has traditionally been a source of food and income for the Micmacs, the Québec government’s decision to restrict fishing arouses consternation and anger in the community. This film provides a historical perspective on the issue, and it documents, with newsclips, photographs and interviews, the two police raids; RICHARD CARDINAL: CRY FROM THE DIARY OF A METIS CHILD (1986, 29 min.) is a moving examination of the tragic short life of a Metis child who was moved around from foster home to foster home; POUNDMAKER’S LODGE: A HEALING PLACE (1987, 30 min.) deals with the healing powers of aboriginal culture and tradition. Sat./sam. Oct. 20 oct., 19:00 ALANIS OBOMSAWIN: EARLY WORKS II: 1988-1991 NO ADDRESS (1988, 59 minutes) Many aboriginal people come to Montréal searching for jobs and a better life. They come without money, without friends, without jobs, and very quickly become part of the homeless population that lives on the streets. In NO ADDRESS, Obomsawin examines the plight of people dislocated from their traditional values, alienated from the rest of society, torn between staying and returning home. LE PATRO LE PREVOST 80 YEARS LATER (1991, 29 min.), an examination of the history of a Montreal community centre; and WALKER (1991, 14 min.) Walker is a young Aboriginal foster child whose only playmate is his dog. Jamie is a lonely young white boy who is afraid of dogs, and has some strange ideas about Aboriginal people. Walker ignores the jeering and taunting of the bigger boys and reaches out to Jamie. Sat./sam. Oct. 20 oct., 21:00 KANEHSATAKE : 270 YEARS OF RESISTANCE Canada 1993, 119 minutes Obomsawin’s essential film chronicle of the 1990 Oka Crisis is a masterful blend of cinema verite, historical contextualization, and philosophical rumination about the relationship between aboriginal peoples and European settlers in Canada. When the mayor of Oka, Quebec, annexes a sacred aboriginal burial ground for a golf course expansion, the Mohawks of Kanehsatake decide to resist. Their resistance is met with the full force of the Quebec and Canadian governments, and their resistance also triggers intense discussions about the many historic injustices faced by Canada’s aborginal populations. A searing documentary, and a searching examination of Canada itself. | ||||
