PUBLIC DOMAIN VIDEO COMMISSIONING PROJECT

(French version follows English)

DEADLINE : October 30, 2007

PUBLIC DOMAIN is a commissioning project offered by SAW Video in collaboration with Library and Archives Canada. SAW Video invites Canadian video artists to submit a research and creation project that utilizes public domain* material found in the audio-visual collection of Library and Archives Canada (LAC).

* Public domain is a statute referring to intellectual properties (works, inventions…) for which, due to the expiration of their copyright, it is no longer necessary to obtain authorization for use.

Library and Archives Canada houses thousands of audio-visual documents and some are now in the public domain*. These records cover a myriad of historic events that directly mark our collective history, such as documentation of the First and Second World Wars and of industrial development. As well as documenting historic events, the extensive collection of moving images at LAC also includes amateur footage of private events such as garden parties, various sporting activities, scenes of camaraderie between soldiers, friends, and workers. These audio-visual records leave traces of the intimate stories of individuals and each offers a different perspective on the passage of time.

Artists are invited to write their own history through the creation of a contemporary work that incorporates historic traces such as these.

To stimulate the imagination and to give an idea of the variety of work housed within Library and Archives Canada, we have selected a sample of works from the public domain. These samples can be found at here. The work you propose to create need not be limited by images such as those we have selected as examples. In preparing your research and creation proposal you are also free to integrate other video material (found or original) in addition to the material culled from Library and Archives Canada.

The project will develop in 3 phases starting in Spring 2008 (dates will be confirmed according to the availability of the artists).

PHASE 1 : Research and pre-selection of public domain clips. Library and Archives Canada offers an on-line databank of its audio-visual collection. Those artists whose proposals are selected will receive a user guide outlining different electronic research mechanisms in order to facilitate their research into archival moving image records in the public domain. This initial phase can be undertaken at the artist's place of residence.

PHASE 2 : Consultation and selection of public domain clips from the Archives. This phase will take place at the consultation centre of Library and Archives Canada in Ottawa where the artists will preview their chosen works.

PHASE 3: Transfer of the selected images and production of a new original work. Production will take place at SAW Video for regional artists or at an appropriate location for artists outside the Ottawa-Gatineau region.

Selected artists will receive :

· An artist's fee of $ 2500;
· Up to $ 2,500 in production and post-production equipment waivers (please refer to our price list at www.sawvideo.com). Artists from outside the Ottawa-Gatineau region will receive a equipment budget up to the same value.
· A one-year producing membership at SAW Video
· A credit of $250 towards any workshops offered at SAW Video.

In addition, SAW Video will cover :
· The cost of travel, accommodation and per diem for artists during their research residency in Ottawa (up to one week)
· The cost of transferring to video selected works from the Archives

Eligibility criteria :
· Artists must be mid-career or established in their practice;
· Artists must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada;
· Eligible projects are those over which the artists maintains full creative and editorial control;
· All genres are accepted (experimental, dramatic, documentary, new media);
· Final productions should take the form of single-channel works not exceeding 20 minutes in duration.

APPLICATION PROCEDURES :

Applicants must submit :
· A project description (2 pages maximum) including a description of the research direction you are planning to undertake at the Archives (the types of material you hope to find, the themes and genres that you wish to research and explore) and your proposed treatment of the found images;
· A brief description of the importance of Library and Archives Canada to your research;
· A current resumé (with an accent on your artistic work);
· A description of your technical needs;
· Examples of your past work (video or film) on DVD, VHS, or Mini DV formats (please limit your selection to 3 examples);
· A provisional budget outlining expenses required for the production (including rental of equipment based on SAW Video equipment rental rates).
NB : Email submissions will not be considered and please do not submit material that cannot be replaced.
Proposals will be evaluated by an independent jury composed of artistic peers. Up to six artists will be selected and successful applicants will be contacted by mid-November.
SAW Video actively encourages applications from all artists, regardless of race, age, class, gender, sexual orientation, or ability.

Commissioned works will be screened publicly. Artists will retain rights over their productions but must provide a copy of their tapes for inclusion in SAW Video's archives.

APPEL DE DOSSIERS
DOMAINE PUBLIC
PROJET DE COMMANDE D'ŒUVRES VIDÉOGRAPHIQUES*

DATE LIMITE : 30 OCTOBRE 2007

· une adhésion d'un an à titre de producteur à SAW Video;
· un crédit de 250 $ pour tout atelier offert par SAW Video;

· un résumé à jour (mettant l'accent sur votre travail artistique);

NEW WORKSHOP SUBSIDY PROGRAM
goback

SAW Video is launching a new initiative with the goal of increasing accessibility to our workshops and artists' training to those who would otherwise be unable to afford it. We are offering 4 workshop subsidies to be applied directly towards workshops of their choice. The subsidies will cover 100% of the cost of one workshop per recipient as well as a one-year basic membership to SAW Video. This is a great opportunity for low-income emerging or established artists to receive training and to become more involved in the centre.

In order to apply for this subsidy program we will need to receive a one-page letter of intent describing how taking a SAW Video workshop would specifically benefit you as an artist. We encourage applicants to self-identify as low income as these subsidies are available only to those who could not otherwise afford our workshop fees. This program is open both to existing SAW Video members and to the general public.

For information on the workshops we offer, go to http://www.sawvideo.com/sawvideo/workshopsx.php

The deadline for submission is Dec 1st, 2007.

Recipients will be able to use their subsidies for workshops scheduled after January 2008. Letters of intent may be dropped off in person at SAW Video during operating hours or may be emailed directly to ariel@sawvideo.com. Successful subsidy recipients will not be made public to the membership, and the results will remain confidential. If you have any further questions regarding the application process please contact SAW Video's workshop coordinator Ariel Smith at 613-238-7628 or at ariel@sawvideo.com.

Thanks to CJOH/CTV Development Fund for their support of this initiative.

Call For Submissions — Cinema and Disjunction

A LIFT Commissioning Project

disjunction: the act of disjoining or condition of being disjoined; separation, disunion. The relation of the terms of a disjunctive proposition. fr dissociation.
—Webster’s Dictionary

The Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto (LIFT) is seeking submissions for Cinema and Disjunction, a film-based commissioning project taking place from Spring 2008 until presentation in Fall 2008. This project, titled after Bernard Tschumi’s “Architecture and Disjunction”, will attempt to move cinematic practices out from theater and gallery to take the city as a surface, or screen. The six commissioned works will engage memory, architecture, public space and film originated moving images to produce compelling new site-specific installations within and upon Toronto’s built environment.

Drawing inspiration from contemporary critiques of the urban form and expanded cinema predecessors this project will transform sites using everything from subtle and discreet projects to large-scale projections. We are seeking projects that go beyond the superimposition of moving images upon the built environment. We are seeking work capable of defamiliarizing and interrupting the city’s visual narratives. Commissioned projects will seek to, in Tschumi’s terms, “reinscribe the movement of bodies in space, together with the actions and events that take place within the social and political realm(s) of architecture” and cinema.

Artists and artist-teams are encouraged to submit proposals (with or without specific sites in mind). All submissions should include
• Proposal/Artist statement (maximum 500 words)
• CV(s)
• Proposed budget
• Visual support material (including documentation of 1 previous film work)

Interdisciplinary projects are welcome, however film (celluloid) must play a central role in the project. Artists (or at least one member of collaborative teams) must be Canadian citizens or landed immigrants. Both emerging and established artists are encouraged to apply. The production portion allocates a maximum of $11,000 in combined cash and services to each project.

Submissions must be received by mail or in person by 6:00pm November 15, 2007. No email submissions please.

Proposals are submitted on the understanding that the projects execution is contingent on funding yet to be secured.

Exhibition: Leaving Deep Water
Curator: Minh Nguyen
Deadline: November 30, 2007

In“The Site of Memory,”an essay written by the African American writer Toni Morrison, water, as “flooding,” is linked to the flow of cultural memory contained by images or pictures. Viscerally, water is also considered a purifier in most religions around the world, and is often believed to have spiritual powers. Colourless, tasteless and odourless, this essential substance of all forms of life is both an economic commodity and the source of many sociopolitical contentions throughout historical ages. To explore the expansive metaphorical nature of water, Galerie SAW Gallery invites submissions from artists in Canada and the US, emerging or established, and from culturally diverse communities.

The submitted works must demonstrate a strong intention in exploring the nature of water as a metaphorical element, a medium, a material, a site, or combination thereof. Works in drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, mixed media, installation, media art and Internet-based art will be considered. Proposals from performance artists are also welcome. The exhibition is scheduled to take place in the spring of 2008. All selected artists will receive an exhibition fee.

Please include: up to 10 images of your work (digital files, slides or prints), an image list, a CV (max. 3 pages), an artist statement (max. 300 words) and a self-addressed stamped envelope (if applicable). Please do not send original artwork. Submissions can be sent through regular mail or electronically. For digital images, please submit jpg files only, at a resolution of 72 dpi and 500 KB maximum. Title each file (image) with a number, your initials, the year and title of your work

Appel de dossiers
Exposition : Partir des eaux profondes
Commissaire : Minh Nguyen
Date limite : Le 30 novembre 2007

CAFE EX : Films of John D. Scott
Fri Oct 19, 2007
7:30pm - 9:30pm
THE FILMS OF JOHN D. SCOTT

The tenth season of Café Ex kicks off with the engaging and experimental documentary works of John D. Scott. Based now in Ithaca, New York, Scott was raised in Canada and has been making work for over a decade. John D. Scott will attend the screening to introduce and discuss his work. He will be joined by his wife and filmmaking collaborator, Karen Rodriguez. Presented in association with SAW Video. The filmmakers will present:

DEAR PAM (2003, 25 minutes)
is a multi-genre experimental docu-comedy that compares major events in Canada’s history with major events in Pamela Anderson’s life.

“Dear Pam plows through pop culture and its vacuities with a tender and leveling hand.” Nick Twemlow, Filmmaker Magazine

“Fascinating” Geoff Pevere, The Toronto Star

followed by

SCOUTS ARE CANCELLED 2007, 72 minutes
This inventive portrait-of-the-artist-as-marginal-man, SCOUTS ARE CANCELLED is Scott’s utterly absorbing portrait of his friend and poet, John Stiles. Having worked as a telemarketer and teacher, Stiles is an eccentric writer whose work captures the textured voices of his rural Nova Scotia roots. To develop his own poetic voice, over the years Stiles decided to turn out to open mike readings, developed a cult following, then published two books with Insomniac press. Director John Scott, who has known Stiles for 20 years, intelligently crafts a non-linear approach that plays with the medium of documentary film itself as much as Stile’s writing plays with the formal aspects of poetry. Stylized colour and black-and-white film, alteration of the frame size and vérité highlights of Stile’s book tour through Nova Scotia reveal a man whose very being resists order and predictability. A fascinating film about a fascinating subject.
