DIRECTOR'S NOTES
goback

As a media arts centre, we get requests throughout the year from curators looking to program the work of local media artists. We also occasionally receive invitations to present work produced at SAW Video in other cities - for instance, we're currently programming work from SAW Video for presentation at the Cinemathèque Québecoise in Montreal this spring.

On these occasions, we refer to our archives or to the Mediatheque to view work. If you've completed videos using SAW Video's equipment, and would like your work considered for future programming opportunities, please deposit a copy of your work in our archives and/or submit it for streaming on the Mediatheque. Do both!!! Ashleigh will take your DVD's for the archives, and Doug will take works for the Mediatheque.

Get those works in!

NEW SATURDAY HOURS

New Saturday Hours:

For the next few weeks, SAW Video will have reduced hours of operation on Saturdays. As of November 10th until December 15th, we will be open from 11am to 3pm . During this time, we will be tracking access to the centre on Saturdays to determine weekend hours in 2008. Our Workshop Coordinator Ariel Smith will be in on Saturdays during this period of time, and members will be able to access most of our regular services including equipment pick up and return . Weekend editing access remains in place for members as before. We hope that our reduced hours do not cause any inconvenience to the membership and would like feedback from you to know if this change effects you in any way.

Thank you to everyone that applied to our Feature Video Fund. Our next deadline is for the SAW Video JumpstArt Fund. Applicants must apply before February 29, 2008. Program details, deadlines and descriptions for all of SAW Video's support programs are listed on our website at www.sawvideo.com.

NEW WORKSHOP SUBSIDY PROGRAM
goback

SAW Video is launching a new initiative with the goal of increasing accessibility to our workshops and artists' training to those who would otherwise be unable to afford it. We are offering 4 workshop subsidies to be applied directly towards workshops of their choice. The subsidies will cover 100% of the cost of one workshop per recipient as well as a one-year basic membership to SAW Video. This is a great opportunity for low-income emerging or established artists to receive training and to become more involved in the centre.

In order to apply for this subsidy program we will need to receive a one-page letter of intent describing how taking a SAW Video workshop would specifically benefit you as an artist. We encourage applicants to self-identify as low income as these subsidies are available only to those who could not otherwise afford our workshop fees. This program is open both to existing SAW Video members and to the general public.

For information on the workshops we offer, go to http://www.sawvideo.com/sawvideo/workshopsx.php

The deadline for submission is Dec 1st, 2007.

Recipients will be able to use their subsidies for workshops scheduled after January 2008. Letters of intent may be dropped off in person at SAW Video during operating hours or may be emailed directly to ariel@sawvideo.com. Successful subsidy recipients will not be made public to the membership, and the results will remain confidential. If you have any further questions regarding the application process please contact SAW Video's workshop coordinator Ariel Smith at 613-238-7628 or at ariel@sawvideo.com.

Thanks to CJOH/CTV Development Fund for their support of this initiative.

Galerie SAW Gallery Call for submissions

Exhibition: Leaving Deep Water
Curator: Minh Nguyen
Deadline: November 30, 2007

In“The Site of Memory,”an essay written by the African American writer Toni Morrison, water, as “flooding,” is linked to the flow of cultural memory contained by images or pictures. Viscerally, water is also considered a purifier in most religions around the world, and is often believed to have spiritual powers. Colourless, tasteless and odourless, this essential substance of all forms of life is both an economic commodity and the source of many sociopolitical contentions throughout historical ages. To explore the expansive metaphorical nature of water, Galerie SAW Gallery invites submissions from artists in Canada and the US, emerging or established, and from culturally diverse communities.

The submitted works must demonstrate a strong intention in exploring the nature of water as a metaphorical element, a medium, a material, a site, or combination thereof. Works in drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, mixed media, installation, media art and Internet-based art will be considered. Proposals from performance artists are also welcome. The exhibition is scheduled to take place in the spring of 2008. All selected artists will receive an exhibition fee.

Please include: up to 10 images of your work (digital files, slides or prints), an image list, a CV (max. 3 pages), an artist statement (max. 300 words) and a self-addressed stamped envelope (if applicable). Please do not send original artwork. Submissions can be sent through regular mail or electronically. For digital images, please submit jpg files only, at a resolution of 72 dpi and 500 KB maximum. Title each file (image) with a number, your initials, the year and title of your work

Appel de dossiers
Exposition : Partir des eaux profondes
Commissaire : Minh Nguyen
Date limite : Le 30 novembre 2007

Available Light Screening Collective Presents

BURIED TREASURES OF THE CFMDC
PROGRAM TWO -- Thursday November 15 2007
Club SAW, 67 Nicholas St., Ottawa ON
7:30 PM, Pay-what-you-can

Available Light Screening Collective presents BURIED TREASURES OF THE CFMDC, three evenings of rarely seen 16mm classics from the Canadian Filmmakers Distribution Centre (CFMDC). Curated and with an introduction by Rick Hancox.

This series presents together for the first time some of the best short 16mm films deposited with the Canadian Filmmakers Distribution Center (CFMDC) during its early years. The CFMDC is Canada's foremost non-commercial distributor and resource for independently produced film. Based in Toronto, the CFMDC was founded in 1967 by a group of visionary filmmakers with the goal of increasing distribution opportunities, audiences, and visibility for artists and independent film.

Some of the filmmakers in BURIED TREASURES are well known, others less so. But what these narrative, documentary, and experimental films have in common is their bold creativity and independent spirit. Some films have gained more exposure than others, but most have never received the recognition they deserve. All of them (with the exception of Harriet Pacaud's Bank Street, showing in Program Three) are still available from the CFMDC, yet have remained overlooked or else largely been forgotten. Diminishing 16mm film projection has only added to their relative obscurity -- and value.

Available Light Screening Collective is proud to be able to present these short film treasures in their original 16mm formats, for one night only.

Program 2: all on 16mm film

Second Impressions (Lorne Marin, 1975, 9mins)
Young Street (Jim Anderson, 1972, 7mins)
