WORKSHOP SUBSIDY PROGRAM
|
|
|
|
SAW
Video is launching a new initiative with the goal of increasing
accessibility to our workshops and artists' training to those
who would otherwise be unable to afford it. We are offering 4
workshop subsidies to be applied directly towards workshops of
their choice. The subsidies will cover 100% of the cost of one
workshop per recipient as well as a one-year basic membership
to SAW Video. This is a great opportunity for low-income emerging
or established artists to receive training and to become more
involved in the centre.
In
order to apply for this subsidy program we will need to receive
a one-page letter of intent describing how taking a SAW Video
workshop would specifically benefit you as an artist. We encourage
applicants to self-identify as low income as these subsidies are
available only to those who could not otherwise afford our workshop
fees. This program is open both to existing SAW Video members
and to the general public.
For
information on the workshops we offer, go to http://www.sawvideo.com/sawvideo/workshopsx.php
The
deadline for submission is Dec 1st, 2007.
Recipients will be able to use their subsidies for workshops scheduled
after January 2008. Letters of intent may be dropped off in person
at SAW Video during operating hours or may be emailed directly
to ariel@sawvideo.com. Successful subsidy recipients will not
be made public to the membership, and the results will remain
confidential. If you have any further questions regarding the
application process please contact SAW Video's workshop coordinator
Ariel Smith at 613-238-7628 or at ariel@sawvideo.com.
Thanks
to CJOH/CTV Development Fund for their support of this initiative.

light
Recognized
internationally as a unique forum that encourages new insights
and collaborations, Subtle Technologies challenges its participants
to contemplate how art and science act upon one another and reshape
perspectives.
Throughout
four days of presentations, we cover a wide variety of subjects.
It is the unexpected threads that are woven between the various
presentations that make the Festival a unique experience.
The
11th Subtle Technologies Festival investigates light as our theme.
Studied as long as recorded history, light continues to inspire
and mystify us. Either visible or invisible, a particle or a wave,
as nourishment, heat, and energy, molecules to complex organisms
respond to and are affected by light. The speed of light defines
our physics and has held great spiritual significance for many
cultures.
We
invite submissions that focus on light as a tool, subject of inquiry,
and source of inspiration for disciplines related to both the
arts and sciences, including: visual arts, performance, moving
image arts, architecture, design, the engineering and natural
sciences, history, anthropology and cultural theory.
We
are interested in looking at light that occurs in fabricated and
natural systems having physical, chemical, and biological origins.
Some possible topics we would like to explore in this year's festival
include but are not limited to:
- light
in medicine
-
light in artforms
-
light's relationship to astronomy
-
perception and psychological effects of light
-
circadian rhythm
-
light as a source of energy
-
physics of light
-
light in dance, theatre and performance
-
light as an architectural or urban planning element
-
light in biology
-
light's relationship to spirituality
-
light as a communication medium
-
optics
-
light's relationship to film, photography and video
-
light and the environment
We are currently seeking submissions for our symposium, exhibitions,
poster session, and film and video evening.
Guidelines
for Proposals:
We
strongly urge those interested in submitting a proposal to acquaint
themselves with our history of programming. The festival is open
to the public and presentations must be accessible to a non-specialized
audience. Each presentation must fill 45 minutes including a question
and answer session. We encourage demonstrations, and can accommodate
/ provide technical support for almost any type of presentation.
All
presenters receive an honorarium and their festival registration
fees are waived.

SAW GALLERY SUBMISSION CALL

version française suivra.)
Galerie SAW Gallery Call for submissions
Exhibition: Leaving Deep Water
Curator: Minh Nguyen
Deadline: November 30, 2007
In“The
Site of Memory,”an essay written by the African American
writer Toni Morrison, water, as “flooding,” is linked
to the flow of cultural memory contained by images or pictures.
Viscerally, water is also considered a purifier in most religions
around the world, and is often believed to have spiritual powers.
Colourless, tasteless and odourless, this essential substance
of all forms of life is both an economic commodity and the source
of many sociopolitical contentions throughout historical ages.
To explore the expansive metaphorical nature of water, Galerie
SAW Gallery invites submissions from artists in Canada and the
US, emerging or established, and from culturally diverse communities.
The
submitted works must demonstrate a strong intention in exploring
the nature of water as a metaphorical element, a medium, a material,
a site, or combination thereof. Works in drawing, painting, sculpture,
printmaking, photography, mixed media, installation, media art
and Internet-based art will be considered. Proposals from performance
artists are also welcome. The exhibition is scheduled to take
place in the spring of 2008. All selected artists will receive
an exhibition fee.
Please
include: up to 10 images of your work (digital files, slides or
prints), an image list, a CV (max. 3 pages), an artist statement
(max. 300 words) and a self-addressed stamped envelope (if applicable).
Please do not send original artwork. Submissions can be sent through
regular mail or electronically. For digital images, please submit
jpg files only, at a resolution of 72 dpi and 500 KB maximum.
Title each file (image) with a number, your initials, the year
and title of your work
(for example: 01MN2007LeavingWater.jpg)

Appel de dossiers
Exposition : Partir des eaux profondes
Commissaire : Minh Nguyen
Date limite : Le 30 novembre 2007
Dans
son essai « The Site of Memory », l'auteure afro-américaine

Light Screening Collective Presents
BURIED
TREASURES OF THE CFMDC
PROGRAM TWO -- Thursday November 15 2007
Club SAW, 67 Nicholas St., Ottawa ON
7:30 PM, Pay-what-you-can
Available Light Screening Collective presents BURIED TREASURES
OF THE CFMDC, three evenings of rarely seen 16mm classics from
the Canadian Filmmakers Distribution Centre (CFMDC). Curated and
with an introduction by Rick Hancox.
This series presents together for the first time some of the best
short 16mm films deposited with the Canadian Filmmakers Distribution
Center (CFMDC) during its early years. The CFMDC is Canada's foremost
non-commercial distributor and resource for independently produced
film. Based in Toronto, the CFMDC was founded in 1967 by a group
of visionary filmmakers with the goal of increasing distribution
opportunities, audiences, and visibility for artists and independent
film.
Some of the filmmakers in BURIED TREASURES are well known, others
less so. But what these narrative, documentary, and experimental
films have in common is their bold creativity and independent
spirit. Some films have gained more exposure than others, but
most have never received the recognition they deserve. All of
them (with the exception of Harriet Pacaud's Bank Street, showing
in Program Three) are still available from the CFMDC, yet have
remained overlooked or else largely been forgotten. Diminishing
16mm film projection has only added to their relative obscurity
-- and value.
Available Light Screening Collective is proud to be able to present
these short film treasures in their original 16mm formats, for
one night only.

THE FILMS OF JASON BRITSKI
Based in Regina, Jason Britski is an independent film and video-maker
whose work explores how we see what we see. Interweaving 8mm film
and digital video imagery, Britski's moving images explore themselves
as much as they explore their subjects. In 1991 he earned a degree
in History from the University of Saskatchewan, and in 1997 he
received his BFA in Film Production from the University of Regina.
Britski has worked in a variety of positions in the film industry
as a producer, director, cinematographer, videographer, sound
recordist, and in all areas of post-production. Jason is currently
a member of the Saskatchewan Motion Picture Association, Blackchair
Distribution, and the Canadian Filmmakers Distribution Centre.
Tonight we will present a number of his films and videos, selected
by Britski himself, including: DOWN PAYMENT ON A DEAD HORSE, TORTURED
BY SIDEWALKS, YOU WOULD MAKE A GOOD LAWYER, SHOOTING STAR, and
others.
Jason
Britski will attend the screening to introduce and discuss his
work.
