NEW WORKSHOP SUBSIDY PROGRAM
goback

SAW Video is launching a new initiative with the goal of increasing accessibility to our workshops and artists' training to those who would otherwise be unable to afford it. We are offering 4 workshop subsidies to be applied directly towards workshops of their choice. The subsidies will cover 100% of the cost of one workshop per recipient as well as a one-year basic membership to SAW Video. This is a great opportunity for low-income emerging or established artists to receive training and to become more involved in the centre.

In order to apply for this subsidy program we will need to receive a one-page letter of intent describing how taking a SAW Video workshop would specifically benefit you as an artist. We encourage applicants to self-identify as low income as these subsidies are available only to those who could not otherwise afford our workshop fees. This program is open both to existing SAW Video members and to the general public.

For information on the workshops we offer, go to http://www.sawvideo.com/sawvideo/workshopsx.php

The deadline for submission is Dec 1st, 2007.

Recipients will be able to use their subsidies for workshops scheduled after January 2008. Letters of intent may be dropped off in person at SAW Video during operating hours or may be emailed directly to ariel@sawvideo.com. Successful subsidy recipients will not be made public to the membership, and the results will remain confidential. If you have any further questions regarding the application process please contact SAW Video's workshop coordinator Ariel Smith at 613-238-7648 or at ariel@sawvideo.com.

Thanks to CJOH/CTV Development Fund for their support of this initiative.

$100 Film Festival Call for Submissions

The Calgary Society of Independent Filmmakers is seeking Super 8 and 16 mm submissions for the 16th Annual $100 Film Festival.

The $100 Film Festival is a showcase for short films taking place annually in March in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. With an emphasis on screening Super 8 and 16mm film, the $100 Film Festival is a unique festival that attracts filmmakers from around the world. The Festival provides audiences with an eclectic mix of drama, animation, comedy and experimental films, and remains one of the few venues where first-time filmmakers to exhibit their work alongside more experienced filmmakers.

The $100 Film Festival is commited to paying artist fees as well as cash awards for the various categories of the films submitted. A panel of selected artists and community members choose all awards except for the Audience Favorite. The festival receives submissions from Alberta, across Canada, and internationally, especially in Europe where the tradition of Super 8 filmmaking is still quite strong. The festival is a hotly anticipated event in Calgary and Alberta, attracting sell-out audiences and critical acclaim.

As the name suggests, the $100 Film Festival started out as a challenge to CSIF members that they could make a film for under $100 using Super 8. The concept proved to be so popular that the festival grew every year, and in its third year the festival allowed 16mm film, foregoing the budgetary restriction of $100 to include innovative works that had a Super 8 or 16mm film print. The $100 Film Festival is now one of the few film festivals that require a film print for screening, leading to a program of unique works.
