NF 08: MOSAICS
goback

NF 08: Mosaics will examine the wide array of works that are found within Media Arts. Works for the festival should examine relations of cross-cultural media - through video, sound, electronic music, internet, print, and writing. A mosaic has traditionally referred to art which takes pieces of a part to create a whole. The word has been used in multiple references across literature, media, science, software, video, and religion to describe different constellations of this phenomena. To quote Sean Cubitt, ‘A newly global connectivity creates new arenas for interaction between science, art, and technology, but also creates the preconditions for global crises.'

In recent years many political scientists and economists have discussed the equalizing effects of the internet on global culture. In addition to film, music and visuals and installation art series, NF 08 will be creating shared media pieces connected via the internet and wireless performance. These pieces will have the ability to become part of a larger discourse on all platforms including audio, video, textual, design, locative, and performance. NF will be looking for applications that incorporate artists' personal work associated with the festivals current programming as well as proposals incorporating this greater participatory project.

To find out more about the events within New Forms, please go to http://2007.newformsfestival.com/events/. Programming includes installation, electronic music (techno, dub, live performance, a/v), presentations and film. NF is always looking to expand its partnerships in the local community as well, and is open to new opportunities with ARC's, Galleries and Collectives. Please contact malcolm@newformsfestival.com with any questions around New Forms Festival 08: Mosaics. Please check online at www.newformsfestival.com for submission form information over the upcoming weeks.

Submission Deadline for NF 08 is March 1st, 2008.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

PIVOT: An Interdisciplinary Graduate Journal of Visual Culture

Second Issue: BUILD

DEADLINE: Friday January 18, 2008

A centre point. A counter point. Pivot provides the space from which to respond to the shared and divided scholarly territories of visual culture. Concordia's new peer-reviewed graduate academic interdisciplinary journal brings together the Departments of Art History, Studio Arts and Communication Studies in a forum for graduate scholarship working towards the exploration of relationships among diverse forms of art practice and production, as well as among art historical scholarship, visual studies, theory, and criticism.

Currently Pivot is an online journal with a small print run. Pivot accepts submissions from graduate students across many disciplines within Canada and internationally. As a journal of visual culture recognizing art production as a site for scholarly exploration, Pivot accepts content in the form of academic papers, artist project descriptions, short texts by artists and image based proposals.

For our second issue, Pivot invites you to explore BUILD.

We are constantly building - we build up, we build in, we build out. We build objects, communities, revolutions, relationships, movements, networks and theories. We build ourselves. With the theme of BUILD, this edition of Pivot will explore and critique how and why we build.

To build can be work or play, a hobby or a natural instinct. It can signal an idealistic concept or a concrete action. "Build" can be something evolving, malleable, and volitional and at the same time trigger the process of entrenchment of things fabricated, stifling and problematic.

In a climate of apocalyptic projections, "build" becomes about progress, contemporary modernity and an inherent desire to move forward and take the next step. As an action, it is always present in one form or another - propelling us through our lives, visibly and invisibly.

Taken literally or metaphorically, the theme of BUILD welcomes academic papers, experimental texts and art projects which relate to this theme in a variety of direct and indirect ways.

A copy of a manuscript, preferably in Microsoft Word or WordPerfect 6.0 or above, may be sent as an attachment via email. Style and format should be consistent with The Chicago Manual of Style, 15th edition or above. Authors must obtain permissions for illustrations, videos, sound works, or other documentary material. Captions should be typed on a separate piece of paper, with appropriate credits and permissions. Images can only be accepted as digital files, preferably as jpegs at 300dpi. Deadline for submissions is January 18, 2008. Email submissions will be accepted at info@pivotjournal.net as well as through the pivotjournal.net website.

Pivot is a collaborative project of Concordia's Graduate Departments of Art History, Communication Studies and Fine Arts

Submissions will be accepted by mail at:

The Iowa City International Documentary Festival is now accepting submissions for our 2008 Festival, to be held April 3-5, 2008. NSI ONLINE SHORT FILM FESTIVAL

NSI Online Short Film Festival: NSI’s new year-round short film showcase

Winnipeg – The National Screen Institute - Canada (NSI) is now calling for submissions for its brand-new, year-round short film showcase: the NSI Online Short Film Festival.

Through the NSI Online Short Film Festival, NSI anticipates streaming around 100 Canadian short films on its website annually. Four calls will be issued each year.

The deadline for this first call for submissions is February 4, 2008. There is no submission fee. Submissions will be accepted on DVD only.

For full details and an application form: http://nsi-canada.ca/nsionlineshortfilmfestival/

During each selection period, approximately 25 films will be programmed and streamed on the NSI site.

Liz Janzen, NSI’s Director of Programming says, “The NSI Online Short Film Festival is all about promoting Canadian films and the people who make them so we’ll be profiling the filmmakers in new ways to give them as much exposure as possible.”

“Moving to an online format also means we’ll significantly extend our audience so even more people can enjoy the best in Canadian short film.”

“We’re making the user experience interactive. The festival will provide plenty of opportunity to talk about the films and network with other site visitors.”

Submissions must be short narratives not longer than 30 mins: the shorter the better. They can be dramas, comedies, animations or short documentaries but they must tell a story and they must be Canadian.

All entries will be screened by an NSI selection committee led by Janzen.

There will be a “Best of” award given to one film from each of the four selection periods which will be cash and/or services. The award will be made by an independent jury comprised of filmmakers and industry members. Details will be announced in early 2008.

The NSI Online Short Film Festival is part of the organisation’s new web-based initiatives. More details will follow in 2008.

The National Screen Institute - Canada, with headquarters in Winnipeg, is Canada's oldest nationally-recognized film and television training school. The National Screen Institute helps emerging writers, directors and producers bring their stories to life to share at home and abroad. Its market-driven programs have led to employment for National Screen Institute graduates by giving them a competitive edge - according to the latest National Screen Institute Alumni Survey, 97% of respondents are working in the industry.

BRUCE MCDONALD LAUNCHES TRACEY RE-FRAGMENTED
goback

Bruce McDonald launches Tracey Re-Fragmented

If you've ever wanted to edit a feature film then here's your chance. Director Bruce McDonald is releasing footage from his newest film The Tracey Fragments online for anyone to edit. How much footage? Well pretty much all of it. In a page on the film's official website there is a part called Re-Fragmented. There, anyone can download all of the footage shot during the four weeks of production in four separate BitTorrent files. The site states the downloads are approximately 4-5 gigs each and include a Final Cut Pro project file. The winner may have his or her cut included as a bonus feature on the DVD. The catch? The contest is only open to residents of Canada. While Americans can't enter, they can still download and play with the footage. It's not often that one get offered all the footage from a feature film to edit and use on their own. In fact the site even states that users can "download and edit their own related projects including music videos, new trailers or re-edit the entire movie." Being that the files are so large it might take some time to download them. But if you can and you have the time it could be a great learning experience.
