This exhibition is organized and circulated by Modern Fuel, Kingston, and presented by Galerie SAW Gallery and SAW Video in conjunction with the Visual Arts Summit (Canadian Museums Association). A 24-page catalogue featuring a conversation with Clive Robertson will be available free-of-charge at the opening. New Forms Festival 2008: Mosaics (Vancouver)

NF08: Mosaics will examine the wide array of works that are found within Media Arts. Works for the festival should examine relations of cross-cultural media - through video, sound, electronic music, internet, print, and writing. A mosaic has traditionally referred to art which takes pieces of a part to create a whole. The word has been used in multiple references across literature, media, science, software, video, and religion to describe different constellations of this phenomena. In recent years many political scientists and economists have discussed the equalizing effects of the internet on global culture. In addition to film, music and visuals and installation art series, NF08 will be creating shared media pieces connected via the internet and wireless performance. These pieces will have the ability to become part of a larger discourse on all platforms including audio, video, textual, design, locative, and performance. NF will be looking for applications that incorporate artists' personal work associated with the festivals current programming as well as proposals incorporating this greater participatory project. Programming includes installation, electronic music (techno, dub, live performance, a/v), presentations and film. NF is always looking to expand its partnerships in the local community as well, and is open to new opportunities with ARC's, Galleries and Collectives.

It concerns that which is local as well as that which is global. It is about forces, agency, strategy, play, and subversion. It is an argument. It seeks change, or it fights to stay the same. It mobilizes. It is unconscious. It is a side effect. It is intentional and affirmative. Video Pool’s 2008/09 programming season will include two programs specifically focused on new media performance and single channel film and video that resist conventional thinking and/or assumptions about what constitute video and new media art practices, and possibly the environs within which they take are expected to place. CANADIAN FILM INSTITUTE PRESENTS

CANADA’S TOP TEN 2007
FEBRUARY 16 – MARCH 16

OSCAR NOMINATED ELLEN PAGE STARS IN OPENING FILM,

THE TRACEY FRAGMENTS

Presented in collaboration with the Toronto International Film Festival Group, Canada’s Top Ten consists of the best feature films - fiction and documentary - produced in 2007, as selected by a panel of Canadian critics, filmmakers, and distributors. The CFI is proud to present eight of the ten films.

Bruce McDonald’s THE TRACEY FRAGMENTS - which is filmed almost entirely in split screen - follows Tracey (played by the Oscar-nominated star of JUNO, Ellen Page) as she leaves her small town for the bright lights of Winnipeg, after the disappearance of her brother.

L’AGE DES TENEBRES is Denys Arcand’s remarkable satire about contemporary Quebec, in which Jean-Marc spends his time daydreaming while his life collapses around him.

Viggo Mortensen and Naomi Watts star in David Cronenberg’s EASTERN PROMISES, a gripping tale of a nurse caught up in the dangerous world of the Russian mafia.

CONTINENTAL, UN FILM SANS FUSIL, is Stephane Lafleur’s debut film; an astonishingly assured, rueful comedy about four characters battling alienation in a Montreal suburb. Winner of the CityTV Award for Best Canadian Feature Film at the 2007 Toronto International Film Festival.

Richie Mehta’s AMAL is a tale of greed: the heirs of a millionaire are confronted with the news that all of their should-be-theirs wealth is given instead to a second-generation rickshaw driver.

In the sly and funny contemporary romance, YOUNG PEOPLE FUCKING, four prototypical couples – and one trio – search for love and sex, though not necessarily in that order.

A PROMISE TO THE DEAD is a personal and political documentary following celebrated writer Ariel Dorfman on his emotionally charged return visit to Chile, having left after dictator Augusto Pinochet came to power.

Simultaneously heartbreaking and affirming, Yung Chang’s luminous documentary, UP THE YANGTZE, focuses on the people who live alongside China’s Yangtze River, many of whom are being uprooted as a result of the Three Gorges Dam project.

Watch for the final two films in this series, Jeremy Podeswa’s FUGITIVE PIECES and Guy Maddin’s MY WINNIPEG, which are due for commercial release sometime this Spring.

Be sure to see these great Canadian films while the buzz is still fresh!

Seminar - Developing Basic Documentary Structure
This seminar-presentation makes use of clips from classic and currently popular documentary films to illustrate common types and facets of documentary structure. More importantly, it outlines in detail a method for developing a more sophisticated basic story structure. Topics covered include: the advantages and disadvantages of structure, the risks of structuring too early or too late, structuring basic principles, and what is needed to create the three necessary parts of structured narrative: the beginning, middle, and end.
Fee: $20 DOC members, $40 non-members

Seminar - Applying Dramatic Structure to Documentary Film
This lecture covers the principles that lie behind dramatic three act structure and uses examples such as Capturing the Freidmans to examine how these principles can be applied to documentary film. Topics discussed include: the nature and movement of dramatic acts, how dramatic units are combined to define the total structure, the different functions of major turning points, and how character development and conflict carry viewers inescapably from start to finish. The emphasis is always on the practical, and the seminar outlines an easily grasped method for filmmakers to use in moving from a basic to a three act documentary structure.
Fee: $20 DOC members, $40 non-members

Documentary Story Structure Workshop (Limited to 4 participants)
A one-day workshop which will:
• develop the basic structure required for storytelling, including addressing character arcs, turning points, set-up and pay-off,
• find the beginning and ending of the film and
• structure the middle of a story.

Special focus is placed on:
• deepening major themes,
• increasing dramatic tension,
• preventing the dreaded "sagging middle"!

The objective of the session is for participants to emerge at the end of the day able to articulate the structure needed to develop a pitch, a script, or a fine cut! If you are looking for an intensive, hands-on experience to move along your project, this is it!
Fee: $125 DOC members, $250 non-members
