Editing from an Artist's Viewpoint
A seminar with Aleesa Cohene (Toronto)
Friday, Feb. 29, 2008
1:00 - 3:00pm, Club SAW
Presented with the support of the Canadian Film Institute's Café Ex series

As both a media artist and a professional editor, Aleesa Cohene has a lot to say about images. In her artistic practice, she works with found media to build an emotional language through which to explore contemporary political paradigms. As In-House Editor at Charles Street Video, a media arts centre in Toronto, Aleesa works on other artists' projects, and teaches courses and workshops on video editing and theory in diverse local educational settings.

In this two hour seminar, Aleesa Cohene will focus on researching and structuring footage, emotion-based editing and narrative structure, concepts and techniques of music remixing, sync sound vs. sound effects and design.

Admission is free but rsvps are requested. RSVP to Erin Kelly at erin@sawvideo.com

Be sure to check out Aleesa's screening on Feb. 28th at 7:30 at Club SAW. http://www.cfi-icf.ca/cohene.html

Bio:
Toronto-based artist Aleesa Cohene produces videos and video installations that seek to occupy the oppositional zone between ideas and emotion, cultural belief and personal integrity. Rooted in the re-use of existing sound, image, music and dialogue, Cohene’s work consciously draws on common resources to expose common anxieties. Short videos like Absolutely (2001), All Right (2003) and Ready to Cope (2006) address themes of political protest, immigration policy and domestic anxieties, while drawing attention to the lens’ ability to reflect us as individuals and societies, while simultaneously absolving us from being seen: permitting us to not look or listen to ourselves, asking that we simply be quiet and passively watch the screen. Her work has shown in film and video festivals across Canada as well as in Brazil, Germany, Holland, Russia, Scandinavia, Turkey, and the United States, and has won prizes at Utrecht’s Impakt Festival and Toronto’s Images Festival. She has participated in a residency at the Banff Centre for the Arts and is currently artist-in-residence at Impakt Works in the Netherlands. Aleesa Cohene is currently part of the creative duo The Archenemy, working collaboratively with artist Benny Nemerofsky Ramsay. She was born in 1976 in Vancouver, Canada.

New Forms Festival 2008: Mosaics (Vancouver)

NF08: Mosaics will examine the wide array of works that are found within Media Arts. Works for the festival should examine relations of cross-cultural media - through video, sound, electronic music, internet, print, and writing. A mosaic has traditionally referred to art which takes pieces of a part to create a whole. The word has been used in multiple references across literature, media, science, software, video, and religion to describe different constellations of this phenomena. In recent years many political scientists and economists have discussed the equalizing effects of the internet on global culture. In addition to film, music and visuals and installation art series, NF08 will be creating shared media pieces connected via the internet and wireless performance. These pieces will have the ability to become part of a larger discourse on all platforms including audio, video, textual, design, locative, and performance. NF will be looking for applications that incorporate artists' personal work associated with the festivals current programming as well as proposals incorporating this greater participatory project. Programming includes installation, electronic music (techno, dub, live performance, a/v), presentations and film. NF is always looking to expand its partnerships in the local community as well, and is open to new opportunities with ARC's, Galleries and Collectives.

It concerns that which is local as well as that which is global. It is about forces, agency, strategy, play, and subversion. It is an argument. It seeks change, or it fights to stay the same. It mobilizes. It is unconscious. It is a side effect. It is intentional and affirmative. Video Pool’s 2008/09 programming season will include two programs specifically focused on new media performance and single channel film and video that resist conventional thinking and/or assumptions about what constitute video and new media art practices, and possibly the environs within which they take are expected to place.
