Available Light Screening Collective is pleased to provide this rare ‘one-night-only’ opportunity to see the powerful feature-length film Crack, Brutal, Grief by R. Bruce Elder, one of the winners of the 2007 Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts. Elder will attend the screening in person to discuss his work, and will also be joined by four artists from Toronto’s Loop Collective: Kelly Egan, Angela Joose, Erika Loic, and Izabella Pruska-Oldenhof. Crack, Brutal, Grief (2001, 122 minutes, 16mm) is an impressive extension of R. Bruce Elder's obsessions with history, media culture, psychology, technology, and the cruelty found in nature. The film acts as a primal scream, literally and metaphorically, as the point of departure for the film came shortly after the gruesome suicide of Elder's close friend. Elder began an investigative examination of graphic images of suicides, scenes of horror, and sexuality found on the internet, which ultimately form the thesis of this cathartic expression of grief. Elder has said of his challenging film Crack, Brutal, Grief, “Increasingly angered by the Web's banalization of suffering, I decided to fashion a compilation film, using only material from the Web that would return to the degraded images I found there the full dignity of their horror.” Cinematheque Ontario writes, “Assisted by a talented team of young Toronto filmmakers - Ilana Gutman, Izabella Pruska-Oldenhof, Maria Raponi, Jeremy Elder-Jubelin, and Greg Boa - Elder constructs a sophisticated montage of highly-processed imagery which transforms these images of horror into a weave of abstraction. The film's inspired sound collage draws upon an expansive range of pop culture and avant-garde sources. Like Elder's ‘The Book of All The Dead,’ Crack, Brutal, Grief uses a series of dialectical concepts in opposition to probe a range of philosophical concerns related to the history of consciousness in the twentieth century.” Crack, Brutal, Grief will begin at approximately 8pm; the film will be preceded at 7pm by a program of works by Loop Collective artists curated by Available Light members James Missen and Christopher Rohde: Light
Magic, Izabella Pruska-Oldenhof, 2001, 4 min. 16 mm
R. Bruce Elder is a filmmaker, critic and teacher of film studies at Ryerson University. Described by New York filmmaker and critic Jonas Mekas as “the most important North American avant-garde filmmaker to emerge during the 1980s,” Elder combines images, music and text to create works that reflect his interest in philosophy, technology, science, spirituality and the human body. His first major film cycle (20 films), The Book of All the Dead, inspired by Dante Alighieri’s Commedia and Ezra Pound’s Cantos, grew out of his preoccupation with the horrors of modernity, its faith in progress and the loss of a sense of what is good and evil. His current film cycle, The Book of Praise, makes extensive use of computer-image generation, highlighting his fascination with mathematics and digital technology. Elder has been a guest lecturer at institutions across North America and around the world and has written books and articles on film, music, poetry and the visual arts. Loop is a Toronto, Ontario-based collective of independent media artists that strives to develop a public platform integrating experimental film and video with other art forms. Loop programs and produces works for presentation through exhibitions and events in both traditional and non-traditional spaces. Their mission is to explore the roots of experimental film and video by creating a dialogue with other art media. Loop strives to promote experimental film and video for critical engagement by cultivating relations among different artistic communities in Toronto.

LILA Date: Friday April 25th and Saturday April 26th, 2008 Advance Tickets: $10.00 each What is Lila? Lila defines divine play in Hindi. It is a concept in Hinduism that explains the universe as a theatre for the gods. Its meaning is enveloped in elements of spontaneity and freedom. Our interpretation of Lila is inspired by myths about the Blue God Krishna. Krishna in Sanskrit means 'black' or 'dark'. The many stories about his life describe him as a mischievous child, a young man who seduces women by the sound of his flute, a warrior, and a sage. Images of Krishna with his consort Radha are favorites of Indian folklore. Their relationship is symbolic for the love between human and divine. We are particularly inspired by the story of Lila Hava, as told in an Indian miniature painting. In this Lila, the couple exchange clothes as a love sport. The Artists: DIPNA HORRA is an art director, multi-media artist and teacher. She has exhibited her creations in Canada, New York, Dubai and London, England. GURPREET 'The Tabla Guy' CHANA and PAUL 'The Drummer' NANUWA form the Toronto duo known as STICKY HANDS. Together they form a mix of Eastern and Western percussion instruments and grooves. They create a melodic and rhythmic sound exploring through the tabla, dhol, hang, drum kit, and many more instruments. Gurpreet Chana has been learning and performing tabla for the past 27 years. Over the last 14 years he has added a unique flavour to his music by mesmerizing crowds with tabla fusion in genres ranging as far wide from Canadian/American folk music, hip–hop, soul, house, jazz, orchestral, flamenco, and the journey and collaborations continue. He has recorded with Grammy award winning artists such as Nelly Furtado and Wyclef Jean and has performed live with Juno Award winner Kiran Ahluwalia, Jorane, Drew Rouse, and many others. His world percussion instruments include the djembe, hang, congas, dhol, zarb, doumbek, daf, or practically anything he can get his hands on! www.thetablaguy.com Paul Nanuwa was born and raised in Leicester, England and now resides in Oakville, Ontario. Initially born with the name, Elvis Nanuwa up until age 4, it’s no surprise that he entered into the wonderful world of music. Paul has been learning and performing drums and percussion for the past 23 years and is best known for his uniquely powerful style and fancy stick technique. His passion and skills have lead him to perform with artists such as I Mother Earth, Our Lady Peace, Sam Roberts, and Sass Jordan to name a few. SHAUN ELIE and ROBERT WATSON are the Ottawa duo known as VCR't. Together, they create Video Concept Art – 'V C Art' – dynamic video mixing with motion graphics, and effects with real time footage. Their partnership is a unique symbiosis of visual styles. They perform at concerts, rock shows, dj events, and art events. ------------------- Media Contact: Dipna Horra, 613-859-1125,

The public side of the site provides members’ names, contact information and research interests for anyone looking for a professional researcher. The combined membership represents decades of experience in film & television, publishing, advertising, and the rare books and prints trade, with a number of members also specializing in music research and clearance. The website provides a catalogue of over 70 members from across Canada, with new members being added every month. A component of the website is accessible to members only and provides materials and information relevant to a researcher’s day-to-day tasks. Articles provide information on research and copyright issues. There are links to a wide range of useful sites – everything from hard-to-find public domain sources to major commercial libraries. The website is updated regularly, and events are posted to keep members up to date on the Society’s activities. The Visual Researchers’ Society of Canada / Association des recherchistes en audiovisuel du Canada was formed in September, 2006 by a group of professional visual researchers who came together to share stories and ideas on the industry. It soon became apparent that they faced similar problems, most particularly access to and acquisition of materials and issues related to copyright. The VRSC/ARAC is active in lobbying to further the concerns of visual researchers within the political, archival and production communities. Over the past two years, the VRSC/ARAC has hosted a number of professional development sessions by guest speakers whose topics range from E&O compliance to the fine points of copyright law. My name is Emma Lui. I’m a second year MA student in Political Economy at Carleton University. Every year Carleton University, along with the University of Ottawa and La Cité Collegiale, offers a week-long Enrichment Mini-Course Program for high school students at Carleton. (see http://www.carleton.ca/emcp/) This year, I am an instructor for a course entitled “Document this! How filmmakers are spreading awareness on human rights issues.” The course examines various human rights issues in documentary films such as sweatshops, aboriginal rights, political repression, corporations and so forth. Students will view documentaries and participate in activities and discussions concerning a variety of human rights topics. As a way of keeping the course dynamic, I am interested in having guest speakers describe their work in human rights and documentaries. So I was wondering if you or someone you knew would be interested in being a guest speaker for this. It's a good way for people to promote their work and the causes they work towards.
