DIRECTOR'S NOTES
goback

We have a couple of new items in our SAW Video News that you should be sure to check out. Thanks to a grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, SAW Video is expanding its staff to include a new part-time communications coordinator. This person will help us to expand our communications with our members, the media, and the general public. The deadline for applications is May 22nd.

SAW Video’s Annual General Meeting is coming up Tuesday May 20th. This is an important opportunity for members to meet the board and staff of the centre and hear about all that’s happened over the past year, plus plans for the future. Our audited financial statements will be ratified on that evening. I encourage all members to come out.

On another note, I’m pleased to announce that SAW Video received an increase in its operating grant from the Canada Council for the Arts, as well as new equipment purchase funds for the next 3 years. The equipment committee has brought their 2008 wishlist of purchases to the board for approval. On this list is the purchase of a new Sony XDcam HD camera with accessories and a Bluray burner and player. We hope to have these new purchases soon – exciting!

(Deadline: Friday May 9th, 2008)

Do you have a great idea for a 5 minute short film? Explore 16mm OR 8mm film through LIFT's workshops, shoot and edit your own film, and see your film on screen at the 9th Annual imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival, which will take place in Toronto from October 15-19, 2008!

About the Courses:
Handmade Filmmaking in 16mm & 8mm (VALUE $500 each course)

Duration: Approximately 7 days from May - July.

The goal of this course is to investigate those unique aspects of film--the film strip itself, the chemical composition of the cinematic image, the division of the film image into frames, the manipulation of the film image by optical means--which will become increasingly important as the medium differentiates itself from the other arts of the moving image.

This all-inclusive hands-on film course will give you a basic foundation in camera operation, hand processing, optical printing and a wide variety of animation techniques. This course is open to absolute beginners and is a great opportunity to develop a project beyond the idea stage.

Participants will receive the opportunity to use the following LIFT equipment and LIFT facilities outside of designated class time:

- 1 Bolex for 1 weekend or 2 week days
- 8 hours with the animation camera
- 8 hours with either of LIFT's optical printers
- 8 hours of darkroom time
- 12 hours of flatbed editing time
- 100 ft. of black & white film

Additional costs for film stock and transferring to digital will be covered by imagineNATIVE (up to a $500 value).

Eligibility Criteria:

This call is open to Aboriginal candidates only;
· Preference will be given to emerging artists or to video artists who have not worked in film (Note: you do not have to be a youth, but youth may also apply);
· Candidates must commit to attending the LIFT training workshops from May 22nd to July 26, 2008.

Please email your one-page short film idea, a statement on why you would like to participate, and a bio to kpotts@imagineNATIVE.org. Should you have additional questions, please call Kerry Potts at (416) 585-2333.

The deadline for submissions is Friday May 9, 2008

NFB IMAGES LAUNCHES AT HOT DOCS 2008
A new Web destination for stock footage professionals

<www.nfb.ca/images>

Toronto, April 23, 2008 – The National Film Board of Canada (NFB) is launching a new Web destination for stock footage professionals: NFB IMAGES <www.nfb.ca/images>. The site will be launched as part of an avant-premiere industry event open to Hot Doc delegates and members of the Canadian filmmaking industry on April 23, 2008 – and will be available online on April 24.

“The NFB collection is Canada’s national audiovisual treasure,” said Tom Perlmutter, Government Film Commissioner and NFB chairperson. “As Canada’s public producer and distributor, and a leader in digital content, we’re committed to using the latest technologies to increase access to this world-class resource. NFB IMAGES is a major step forward in the NFB’s digital strategy.”

NFB IMAGES is a unique state-of-the art Web site that will allow researchers, producers, directors and editors from around the world unprecedented access to stock footage, giving them the ability to view, edit and share online. What’s more, advanced research tools make finding the shots easier than ever, with free downloads for immediate offline editing. Backing all this up is a bilingual team of stock footage experts to help filmmakers meet tight deadlines, providing superb research assistance and rights clearance support.

The NFB’s storied history in audiovisual excellence goes back 70 years. But NFB IMAGES goes back even further, offering a century’s worth of historical footage – rare images of yesteryear, matched by a wealth of contemporary footage.

When NFB IMAGES launches on April 24, 2008, 20% of the NFB stock footage collection will be available to screen online – with thousands more hours available via text-based search. The NFB is in the process of digitizing its entire stock footage collection – including hundreds of hours of high-definition material – so that all footage will soon be available to preview, edit and share, all online.

This new Web site is the latest chapter in the NFB’s growing international presence in high-quality film and video archives. The NFB represents the world-renowned National Geographic and Gaumont-Pathé archives in Canada, and offers stunning new material shot in high definition, including superb footage from independent productions such as Shining Mountains, a majestic look at the Rocky Mountains, and Arctic Mission, a voyage into the changing face of the North.
