This is the last lecture as part of SAW Video's new, FREE lecture series, Night School!  Night School is a bi-monthly lecture series designed to provide the basic fundamentals of media arts, theories and current works of significance and interest. We want to demystify this constantly evolving form of ours.

Night School is divided into four lectures:

  • The Fundamentals of Media Art // January 17th, 2019
  • The Moving Image // RESCHEDULED April 11th, 2019 (Lecture covers analogue/digital video art, new media and interdisciplinary forms)
  • Alternate Realities // May 9th, 2019 (Lecture covers virtual reality, art gaming, interactivity and animation)
  • Frequencies // July 11th, 2019 (Lecture covers audio art, performance, installation, performance & sound, installation & sound)

This is a free event for SAW Video members and members of the arts community at large. You are eligible to attend this lecture if you are: a SAW Video member, professional artist, creator, cultural worker, looking to experiment in a new discipline, admirer & or advocate for video and media arts. 

Frequencies 

Your piece is only as good as it’s sound, right? This lecture will endeavor to illuminate the often under represented, the forgotten, the last but not least, sound. Participants will be introduced to audio art, performance, installation, performance & sound, installation & sound. Sound will be investigated in this lecture as more than just a tool of accompaniment. Participants will be introduced to the history of and significant artists in these forms. Discussion will be centered around theory and practice.  

This is a free event for SAW Video members and members of the arts community at large. You are eligible to attend this lecture if you are: a SAW Video member, professional artist, creator, cultural worker, looking to experiment in a new discipline, admirer & or advocate for video and media arts.

Materials 

If you care to do so, feel free to bring a notebook, laptop or tablet along with you for note-taking purposes (no distracting images please). No other materials are required.

About Christopher Payne

Christopher Payne works predominantly with sound, light, and video, as experiential tools. Payne completed his original artistic training in cinema at Concordia University in 2007 before completing his MFA at the University of Ottawa in 2013. His work and performances have been presented in Alberta, Quebec, Ontario, Poland, Belgium, and Mexico. Payne is currently SAW Video’s Technical Director and professor in Video Production at the University of Ottawa and the Ottawa School of Art.
