Knot Projections: Call for Artists
SAW Video Media Art Centre is seeking five artists to participate in its inaugural Knot Projections public program, with a deadline for applications of October 2nd, 2018. Artists must be based within the Champlain Region, which includes Ottawa-Carleton, Renfrew, Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry, and Prescott & Russell. The application requirements include a letter of interest, a CV and bio, and documentation of previous work. We accept applications from artists at emerging to mid-career stages, and there is no application fee for this program.
About the program:
Knot Projections is a commissioning program funded by the Ontario Trillium Foundation that seeks to build capacity for regional artists to create experimental moving image works that are intended for a public context. Through this open call, a cohort of five artists will be selected to each produce individual video commissions that address, utilize and respond to the unique challenges and opportunities that outdoor, public projection creates and offers. The production period for these commissions will begin in October 2018 and conclude in May 2019, with the final works being projected large-scale on an urban surface in Ottawa (location TBA) as part of a group exhibition in Spring/Summer 2019. Over this period, the selected artists will work regularly with the program’s Resident Critic, Malini Guha, as well as SAW Video’s Programming Director, Neven Lochhead, who will both provide curatorial and technical support.
The selected artists will also be required to attend the Video in the Public Sphere speaker series, taking place at Knot Project Space over the span of Fall 2018/Winter 2019. This series of talks will feature Visiting Critics who each engage with the public sphere in their artistic, curatorial or theoretical practices. These lectures will range in topics and perspectives, and will generally seek to examine and discuss the relationship between the moving image, spectacle, and public space. The Visiting Critics will also work directly with the cohort of selected artists in intensive workshops, group discussions and/or one-on-one meetings.
Artist Fees and Resources:
Selected artists will be paid an artist fee totalling $1500 for the production and exhibition of their work. Over the course of the production period they will also be given free access to SAW Video’s equipment rentals, video and audio editing suites, communal workspaces and workshops.
