"If Garvey Was Here" is a 30-minute video on the state of pan-African solidarity in Ottawa around the year 2001. Produced for Jaku Konbit by Jafrikayiti, this documentary features, among others, Dr. Tony Martin, world-renowned scholar on Marcus Mosiah Garvey and the 1920’s United Negro Improvement Association (UNIA). The latter is presented as a model and major inspiration source for Ottawa’s own modern pan-African organization, Jaku Konbit.
Married and father of one child, Jafrikayiti carries, in addition to a public service career, the hats of author (Viv Bondye! Aba Relijyon!, 2000), visual artist, social activist and community radio producer. A University of Waterloo (Hon. B.Sc., Biology) graduate, for the last eleven years he has worked with the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), which supports research in universities and colleges, research training of scientists and engineers, and research-based innovation.
